🌿 A living fence is not instant or maintenance-free. Plant bare-root whips from late autumn to early spring while they are dormant. Space them roughly 30–60 cm apart; a staggered double row creates a thicker hedge.

🪵 You’ll need young flexible plants, sturdy wooden stakes, soft ties, a spade, mulch and pruning shears. Plant at the original soil depth, secure the stems and weave them gently without splitting the bark.

💧 Remove grass around the base, add mulch and water during dry periods—especially through the first few summers. Replace any plants that fail to establish.

✂️ Willow can be woven immediately and grows quickly, but may need trimming several times each summer. Hawthorn, hazel and hornbeam are normally grown for several years before being traditionally “laid” and woven between stakes.

🐄 A young living fence will not stop livestock immediately. Protect it with a temporary stock fence until the stems become established, woody and dense. Avoid major trimming during bird-nesting season when nests are active.

🌱 Willow suits moist ground; hawthorn forms a thorny, dense barrier; hazel is flexible; hornbeam makes a strong hedge; and young dogwood stems bend easily. Choose plants suited to your local soil, rainfall and climate.
