Kate bought this hat online during Covid and sent it to an artist to burn these beautiful flowers into it.

Because Kate bought this hat online she ended up buying a hat that was several sizes too big. It also had a huge 4” brim and swallowed her up.

When she finally got it back from the artist she loved the art work but was so disappointed in the fit. She thought “oh well, I guess this hat will live on my wall as art work.”

She didn’t realize the hat could we sized down to fit her well.

This is until she heard about FauxyFurr in Arlington. Her boyfriend came in and commissioned a custom hat and she learned from him we could adjust her hat.

She brought it in and we sized it down, sewed in a real leather sweatband, picked out cool hat trims and cut her brim down from a 4” brim to a 3.5” brim and reflagged it to a shape that was flattering to her face.

Voila! She left Happy 👍

Brian follows several hat makers on instagram. These hat makers live in other states.

Brian reached out to FauxyFurr to see if we could make the design he wanted.

Right away I recognized the hat design he wanted. This was a design I was sure I could make, though I had never done it before. This crown is completely hand shaped.

We looked at the black felt options and chose the 100x beaver fur in a western weight.

Brian also requested an exotic skin hat band in black. We purchased a small crocodile skin from Tandy leather and cut it down to size.

We spent several hours in the shop the day he came in to pick up his hat. We made small adjustments to his hat height, the definition to the corners of the coffin, and the height of the hatband.

We took extra time with this build and Brian left with a hat he LOVES

Visible Success vs Internal Angst

We celebrated 3 years in April in our own brick n mortar.

If someone stood in front of our shop that day and only saw the balloons depicting celebration, they see half the picture.

They don’t see the expensive flower pot we’ve tended to for 6 years that was carelessly knocked over at midnight.

They don’t see the handmade A-frame sign and artist-commissioned images that only 3 years ago were new & beautiful and are now weathered and in need of repair.

From the outside it looks like you’ve built something solid but internally it never feels settled. I am constantly adjusting “success”.

I find myself living two different narratives simultaneously, the visible narrative…what people assume and the lived narrative…what I feel.

How can something be working and feel like it’s falling apart?

This photo holds both narratives—the celebration and the wear, the pride and the frustration, and the falling down.

What this photo doesn’t show you is the internal resolve to get up and tend to the things no one else notices.

Maybe success isn’t something you arrive at—it’s something you keep choosing. Or maybe I am clinically insane— only time will tell.

Thank you for coming in and celebrating our 3 years. You are why we get back up.
