One thing that not everyone understands but that I’m consumed with is how design is made up of a million small things that all add up to something greater than their parts.
How every choice is an opportunity to do something fresh, unexpected, bold or unique that create just a tad more interest and holds your eye in a way that feels satisfying.
In his book Unreasonable Hospitality, Will Guidara tells a story that lives in my bones now. It’s about how Walt Disney made the engineers at Disney create subtle movement in their animatronics so they were more life-like. Something no one would name explicitly but that they would feel. ✨
Here are a few examples of details I’ve included in some of my designs to show you what I mean.
Oversized art here is obviously eye catching. But, wood slat wall that creates separation but still lets air and light through. Also the texture of the light fixture 😍
This is a story about mixing textures on a neutral and calming bedroom. Notice the subtle stripe, jacquard bolster, nubby bed frame and luxurious drapes. (The fall colors out the window don’t hurt either)
White bathroom fixtures feel so fresh and playful to me. Just something that you see less than traditional brass or chrome.
The shapes and lines here from the backs of the stools, to the throw pillows and paper pendants create a lot of interest.
Another wood slatted half wall to conceal a commode and a subtle crackle texture on this light fixture feels like an organic touch that works with the handmade tile.
The windows, and bench / book storage are very square while the opening and seating is a mix of soft round shapes.
(Pillows don’t have to be square)
The look of a plant breaking up the lines of a shelf is something I just like. I don’t know why. Also the handmade pottery 😍
Another example of geometry play. Square tiles, bobbin mirror, and textured wood create a nice mix that avoids to much of the same same for your eye.
