There were over 50 African American owned businesses in the Eagle Market Streets District ("The Block") over the years prior to Urban Renewal. These were well documented in this hand drawn map by local historian Mr. Matthew Bacoate, who also documented these businesses in a historic document he authored in 2011, called "Historic Demographic of "The Block" Business and Cultural Area" for the period 1938-2005.
