In the mid-80s, Obermeyer was the first to engineer something into kids' outerwear that solved a real problem for parents: gear that gets outgrown before it wears out.. Extra fabric tucked into the sleeves and pant legs, ready to let out as your kid did exactly what kids do. We called it the I-Grow system, and four decades later it's still the same idea, still doing the same job.

Two kids, two different eras, one system that never needed reinventing.

Skiers in Aspen's early days dressed for a lot of things. A lift ride in 20-degree wind was not one of them.

Klaus watched his students freeze at the neck on the way up and come down stiff and uncomfortable. So he built a turtleneck collar that actually worked on the mountain. Fitted, stretchy where it needed to be, made to seal out wind instead of just looking good in a photo.

It was the same logic behind almost everything he made. Spot the problem. Build the fix. Move on to the next one.

While North America is deep in patio season, ski season is still very much on at Ski Portillo Chile. South America's oldest ski resort, sitting above Laguna del Inca in the Chilean Andes, has been running since 1949.

The entire Ski & Snowboard school has been wearing Obermeyer for the past two seasons now, putting the gear through conditions that don't forgive shortcuts.

There's something fitting about how these two found each other. Portillo is a family mountain. Obermeyer is a family brand. Both got started in the late 1940s, both have spent decades putting craft first.

The Obermeyer mark has changed more times than most people realize. New fonts, new colors, a few updates that probably felt like a big deal at the time.

Klaus hasn't changed nearly as much. He's still finding reasons to get on skis, decade after decade, mark after mark.

We think that's the real story here. Not the logo. The guy who kept showing up long enough to wear all of them.

Before there was a company, there was a ski instructor.

Klaus Obermeyer taught lessons on Aspen Mountain in the late 1940s, back when skiwear wasn't doing much for anyone, including him. So he fixed his own gear first. That fix solved a problem every skier on the hill had, and it turned into a company that's still here today: still family-run, still in Aspen, still making gear for the mountain that started it all.

Obermeyer's founding sits in the same window as Aspen's first chairlift going up the mountain. Not a footnote in that story. One of the businesses that helped build it. This year, while America marks 250 years and Colorado marks 150, that timing means something.

David Jacobs, founder of Spyder, passed away this week.

He started the brand in his kitchen, trying to build his sons a better race sweater.

Klaus started this brand in Aspen, turning a goose down comforter his mother sent him into a parka, because his ski students were freezing on the mountain.

Different decades, same instinct. See the problem, fix it.

Still made the same way.

Klaus Obermeyer built the first mirrored ski lens in Aspen. Function first. The light at altitude is its own problem, and nobody else was getting around to solving it. The fashion part, he'll tell you himself, came naturally.

The Rallye is still here. Same original design, always handmade.
