Annual reminder to help Keep Athens, Athens!

Over the past few years, we’ve watched too many longtime, locally-owned Athens businesses close their doors. Every time it happens, it’s a gut punch for those of us who truly love this town and the community that makes it special.

Running a small business is hard. Running one in a small town is harder. Running one in one of the poorest regions of Ohio is harder still. Movie theaters compete with streaming. Retail competes with Amazon, Walmart, and online giants. Restaurants compete with massive chains and brutal delivery app fees. And with the new tariffs hitting manufacturing and goods, all small businesses are once again dealing with rising costs, economic uncertainty, and the very real possibility of even higher prices ahead.

Athens is an incredibly supportive community — and we’re grateful every day for that. But the reality is that most local businesses operate on razor-thin margins. We can’t stock every brand, every size, every color, every width the way big box and online retailers can. Competing on sheer inventory is impossible.

What local businesses do offer is something far more valuable: real human connection, personal service, and the simple but powerful truth that when you shop local, your money stays here. Up to 70% of every dollar spent at a locally owned business is reinvested back into the local economy — supporting jobs, schools, nonprofits, and the character of this place we call home.

If small businesses disappear, Athens risks becoming just another town filled with the same chain stores and restaurants you can find anywhere in America. And honestly — that would really suck.

So this holiday season, shop local when you can. You might not find exactly what you had in mind, but your dollars will go much further — and they’ll be spent, and re-spent, right here in our community.
