It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community.
Next up is our very first BIG interview on the show and the first time we talked with Olympian and America’s Coach, Jeff Galloway.
Welcome back to Run Eat Drink Podcast!
In this episode, I want to share the method I use for races of all distances. I discovered his method in January 2011, when I ran my first half marathon at Walt Disney World. I was an inexperienced runner who found a book online with a running schedule, tried to follow it, and headed to the race. Mistakes were made. I would describe that experience as painful and a real struggle, although I crossed the finish line with my husband and accomplished the goal. At the race expo, Jeff gave a motivational talk about his method. He talked about taking walk breaks so you can finish strong. Those walk breaks are short, 30 seconds or less, and protect you from running out of gas at the end of the race. He said it does not matter whether you are trying to qualify for Boston or complete your first race. You can use this method to pass others at the end, finish with a smile, and still have the energy to celebrate afterward.
When we got home and started to train for our next race, his words were in the back of my mind. I researched and found that he had a whole program and that there was "an app for that" from LoloFit. It gives you a training plan based on your goal and a recommended ratio for running and walking. Jeff's voice tells you when to run and when to walk and drops in occasionally with motivation and encouragement to keep going during the workouts. I cannot tell you what a difference it made in training, motivation, and performance. I became one of his e-coach clients and have been an avid supporter ever since!
On Sunday, August 6th, 2017, America's Coach and Olympian Jeff Galloway hosted a 3-hour running school in Orlando, Florida, at the Track Shack. This gave me an excellent opportunity to share what his method is all about and why it works. It was such a great experience, and afterward, we sampled some tasty food and beverages right around the corner at Santiago's Bodega.
Jeff took the time to do an interview with us, and he gave us so much great information, so we are breaking up his interview into three separate podcast episodes. This is the first part of his chat with us.
Jeff talks about the history of the run-walk-run method and how he became "America's Coach." In part two, we will explore the science behind the technique, and in the final part of his interview with us, Jeff shares resources for anyone who wants to use his run-walk-run method.
Special thanks to the Orlando Track Shack, Jeff Galloway, and Santiago's Bodega for allowing us to film this episode. Here are some resources to find out more about his method and the delicious food and beverages we tried.

The “Backyard BBQ 20K Trail Run Challenge” is not part of any Race Series. Race Course is rolling hills on the groomed trails of Fort Yargo State Park. The “Backyard BBQ 20K Trail Run Challenge” consist of four (4) separate 5K runs. Each runner will have 45 minutes (14 minute pace) to complete each 5K. At the end of each 45 minute segment the next 5K run will start. In other words if you finish a segment in 25 minutes you will have 20 minutes to recovery before the next segment starts. There will be ample verbal notice before each segment starts so you can position yourself at the starting line. Runners failing to finish a 5K segment within the 45 minutes will be posted as DNF (NO EXCEPTIONS). Segment start times are 8:00am. 8:45am, 9:30am, 10:15am. The “Challenge” of this event is to pace yourself through each 5K segment in order to be able to complete the 20K without bonking but at the same time keeping a competitive pace to be able to make the podium. A contest of speed versus stamina. In case Social Distancing is still in place on the date of the Race, there will be starting group’s pre-determined and members of those designated groups will stay with that group on each separate segment. BBQ dinner and refreshments will be served after the last 5K segment has finished and times are tallied for awards. This will be a chance for our running community to not only be challenged physically but to enjoy the camaraderie of friends and fellow runners. Thanks! Tim
