57 years on the planet, 31 years as a Girl Dad

I gotta say my dad has impeccable music taste. It wasnt until I went away to college I realized how diverse my musical taste was a result of his life experiences born in ⚜️ New Orleans, raised at St. AUGUSTINE, 🎓Howard University Alumnus

Singing in the car on the way and back from school, with my dad, and sister- are key childhood memories

Our Girl Dad infused our car rides with Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo, Sly & The Family Stone, Erykah Badu 🎼🎵💿

But every now and then, during our morning routine, a challenge would arise.

We'd wake up, and someone had broken the backseat window of my dad's car to snag the radio, cds 💿, and sometimes his personalized tape cassettes 📻

My 10 year old brain would think, what's the point of getting the window fixed, replacing cds, let's just leave it for a while, what's the point of getting another radio, we can go another month without it, because I knew someone was clearly watching the car.
I thought if we eliminate the thing they wanted then at least they'll leave the car alone.

I internalized each window break, cried everytime: "Why couldn't I hear the people outside, why couldn't I protect my dad? Was I sleeping SO hard I couldn't hear glass shatter?" (Apparently)

My dad is telling me it's okay but I'm like no- let's not normalize stealing dad.

Over and over again this would happen, and after my dad would finish cleaning out the glass from the backseat, he'd give the usual warning be careful, sit on this blanket, dont touch the door, and we'd head to school, he'd start playing the steering wheel like a drum, and we'd sing, to cover the silence in LA morning school traffic, back on course even with all the drama- I was never late to school. My dad always taught me to choose the path of happiness, regardless of the length you'll have it for. My dad is the perfect combination of resilient and goofy. Eventually, he never had to buy another radio or window.

Please help me wish my amazing father, the living representation of Dad Jokes, and one of the greatest carpool karoke singers a very HAPPY 57th BIRTHDAY!! 🫡😍🥳🎂

We had The Wiz on VHS and DVD. I knew “You Cant Win” before I knew multiplication, my soul understood before my mind did. There's a magical potion inside the rhythms, cadences that transported me back to my own childhood stage memories from living room to stage. My sister and I performed The Wiz in our summer theater camp at the Stella Adler Theater on Hollywood Blvd, many years ago I played Evileen and my sister all of 6 years old was a Poppy Seed among other roles (we recently processed that) while seeing it for the first time live on Broadway, by literally the greatest performers of our time 24 yr old @ killing it as Dorothy, THEE Avery Wilson, listening to his vocal capacity while he's doing actual aerobics toe-touches, splits, you name it, his athleticism blew my mind, and the Timman wow, a voice like BUTTAH silky smooth, his modern approach to the role warmed every part of my soul, and the LION just rich and sassy, with a luscious curl pattern this entire cast has truly outdone themselves. The direction, impeccable, i only wish i had time to see it again before it leaves on the 18th of August. They did such A phenomenonal job putting the cultute ALL up and through it.

My favorite moments actually happened before the show even started, by chance, I saw entering the backstage door, she of course doesnt know i’ve had her Tiny Desk performance on repeat since it came out, so i took a deep breath, because it was too late it was literally just the two of us, tryna play it cool and casually as possible wished her a wonderful show, she humbly said aww thank you so much, she tucked her head back down went through the back stage door and the next time I saw her was in character.

Every age Demographic was there, every shade of Black, the beauty of US, the vibe, it's just electric. During intermission we congregated as we do, agreeing how disappointed we were at the lack of advertisements for the show- it deserved so much more HOWEVER I am forever grateful for the gift.
I can feel a Brand New Day, which I learned was written my THEE GOAT

I am renewed. My spirit is full of devine courage.
