Sometimes you SHOULD judge a book by its cover. 😉 See below....
I had a very old-fashioned public school education, which included 5 years of Latin -- including Roman and Greek history, culture and language. I then took Italian in college and had the chance to study abroad for free in Rome, where I learned more classical history and studied Etruscan art. Then I spent the last 20+ years examining and teaching the Bible, so I gained more exposure to Greek vocabulary while studying the New Testament texts.
I guess you could say I'm a classical civilizations nerd. 🤓 So I'm of the opinion that everyone should read The Iliad.
You probably know that Homer's second volume, The Odyssey, traces the post-war journey of one Greek man home to Ithaca. "Wily Odysseus" does appear in the precursor to that book, The Iliad -- but he is just a supporting character in The Iliad, the clever inventor of the Trojan Horse.
The Iliad focuses on the hubris, pathos, gods and human heroes/victims of the ill-conceived Trojan War, with Achilles and Hector as the stars. This BEAUTIFUL original translation by Alexander Pope dates to the 1710s but is easily understandable today.
I have available this leather-bound, stamped and gilded copy from Easton Press, that has never been read. It includes an attached ribbon bookmark and moiré endpiece fabrics. The cover features a modified Greek-key gilding on front and back. The spine is in near- perfect condition.
