I'm being a bad girl, doing something sneaky in my basement studio. I'm putting side pockets in my new Renaissance kirtle, hiding them in gathers. Not historically accurate, true. Bad girl. Not sorry.

This is my original Carpetbagger Coat design.
This particular one was made from an upholstery project's leftover yardage found at a yard sale.
It's amazing what cool stuff you can make with someone else's extras!

I feel like trying this with some darker, more earthy colors next time...

This dress design is one of my originals. I sketched and painted the design, then I used AI to translate my artwork into a realistic looking photograph. I love being able to see it this way before cutting any fabric. It's not a perfect translation, but it's pretty close! Now I know that I would definitely wear this.

This is the Renaissance Kirtle pattern design I'm working on right now. I'm really enjoying the embroidery!
This time I'm skipping the knife pleats and gathering the skirt into the V front.
I've also used some Rigilene boning, sparingly, in this practice piece. I really like the effect, but we'll see how it works and feels all together after the skirt bottom is attached.
I'm embroidering the eyelets, and boy, are they pretty. Funny though, because I don't know if anyone would notice, lol.

I just found this video of the costume that won me an award about a decade ago! My Phoenix costume was manufactured, and featured on the Yandy costume website.
The wings were individually airbrushed!
Fun 😊

A new custom kirtle bodice is born.

I've discovered a way to embroider eyelets on my machine. No more metal mucking up the historical accuracy effort!
I'm experimenting with small loops built into the waistline for Renaissance doo-dads. I love external embroidered pockets and bags that hang from the waist to be shown off. These loops will give the wearer a good place to attach them.
Tomorrow is skirt day...

Here's another lovely Italian Renaissance costume designed by Katherine Garlick at Youngstown State University, and constructed by me. I finished it just in time for the first dress rehearsal of "Kiss Me Kate."

I love the dropped shoulders and giant upper sleeves. The fabric borders were also a lot of fun. The lower fitted sleeves were made with a fabric I really wasn't sure about, but I love it -- so unique.

I made yards and yards of linen piping today for a Renaissance kirtle. For some reason, 80's disco makes it go faster.
I love the way piping outlines and frames certain top layer garments. Totally worth the time and effort!

I've been working on a custom raglan sleeve pattern to build something special with. It's amazing how complex the process is! I'm on my third draft.

After I get this exactly right, I'm going to create a sleeve with smocking and some sculpted fullness for a Renaissance overdress (my design below).

I have a feeling everything that comes after this raglan block will feel easy peasy!
