Joey for Roo

Joey for Roo We are Joey for Roo, a clothing brand with a mission to support moms and parents.

Babies can't read, so why do companies design baby clothes with messages for them, instead of parents who could use the extra support? Our clothes empower moms, dads, and all parents and caregivers through encouraging messages, while also normalizing and raising awareness for the importance of maternal mental health.

I wish this post could be an optimistic and love-filled ode to today, but instead all I can think about is how drastically the 1 in 5 statistic (number of birthing people who suffer from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders) will increase when we force people to birth no matter the circumstances.

This is a devastating hit to us all. If you’re struggling right now, you’re not alone. Take care of yourselves and each other. Onward we fight.

Thank you to for these words and all who are amplifying this issue and fighting this fight.

To the birthing people living with pain weeks, months, years after delivery; I see you.

We often applaud the pregnant and birthing body for being “magic.” And sometimes it is. The ability to grow a human being is nothing short of absolutely bonkers amazing. Like their little hands get created as if from cellular cookie cutters. There is no denying it; we’re fu***ng incredible.

But sometimes the magic goes awry. For some (most) of us, the magic doesn’t do everything seamlessly; maybe the cells don’t work together properly while growing the tiny human or maybe we are left with broken bodies. It can feel easy to feel broken when our “magic” bodies don’t give us magic.

I’ve been pretty MIA on here due to finally getting the treatment for the chronic pain brought on by my pregnancy three years ago. My journey has included being gaslit about my pain, finding my own diagnosis, fighting with doctors and insurance, countless chiropractor and acupuncture appointments, and then finally ending up at where for the first time I felt SEEN.

My weeks now are punctuated by brutal myofascial massage, cupping, physical therapy, and painful injections from a physiotherapist once a month. It’s exhausting. And I’m grateful I finally found health professionals who can (hopefully) help me dig my way out of the pain.

I’m not really sure why I’m sharing all this except to say; if your body didn’t deliver 100% on the magic we were promised, you’re not alone. You’re not broken. You don’t need to suffer. And never give up on finding the people who will validate you instead of try to silence you. You deserve peace. You deserve to be believed. You deserve magic.

The Black Women’s Health Imperative is the oldest national organization dedicated solely to improving the health and wellness of Black women and girls in the U.S.—physically, emotionally, and financially.

I’m proud to support this organization through 10% off all online sales from January to March. My hope is that these humble funds can make a difference for Black women and girls who are being disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please take the time to learn more about this organization (link in bio) and how they are helping make a difference in this world. Consider donating directly to them or making a purchase through our store to support them indirectly.

“We believe that Black women and girls should enjoy optimal health and well-being in a socially just society.”

I’m still pinching myself…

It feels surreal to see something I made, born from a really difficult time in my life, hanging in a shop for other people to buy for themselves or people they love.

If you’re in the Baltimore area, you have to check out the pop-up shop! There are so many amazing small businesses to shop from and support. Thank you MIB for including me! Swipe to the last picture to see address and hours. Go and shop and then please come back and tell me what you found!

Making special things for special people to celebrate special moments means more to me than I could ever say. 🌈

The world has felt like a lot for me recently (anyone else? 🙋🏼‍♀️) but these photos of one of my best friend’s sweet rainbow baby, beautiful son, and deeply loved late dog help me see that change and grief and joy are inevitably intertwined.

Life is hard. And life is beautiful.

Did you know that mothers do 80% of the holiday shopping for a family?

This time of year can be exhausting for many reasons, not least of which is gift-giving. What to get, where to get it, where to get a deal… it’s a lot.

If you can shop small businesses, wonderful! If you can’t, that’s okay too. Today is a great day to support small businesses for and find special and unique gifts for everyone on your list (and please include yourself on your list!).

If you’re looking for a special gift for a mom in your life (including you!), please consider a “tough as a mother” tee from our shop. Handstitched and made with love to make sure every mom knows they are appreciated.

Hello, I love you, a new design is live!

I really love this one. Simple yet meaningful, a little “I love you” sign in American Sign Language. I hope this can serve as a reminder to parents who need it, your little one loves you even if they don’t say it! This one is for the toddlers and younger kiddos (2T-4T available online now), but let me know if you’re interested in a baby bodysuit and I can make it happen.

Can I hit the snooze just a few more times, please?

And while we’re at it, how about hitting the pause button? Pause on baby sleeping, pause on them being this little, pause on the moments the light hits their little faces just so.

Thank you for sharing this sweet photo of baby Emeline in her custom hand-stitched name bodysuit. 💗

I spent hours…

Before my son was born, I spent hours researching things like when to start solids, how to cut fingernails, and the best swaddles/bassinets/everything else. How many hours did I spend planning for postpartum? Big fat zero.

Oh, how I wish I could go back and spend that time differently. There are so many amazing postpartum planning tools now, like those from or . If you are delivering anytime in the near future, please do yourself a favor and plan for postpartum. If you know someone who is pregnant, please share this with them and better yet, help them plan and be part of their postpartum support team!

Did you plan for postpartum? What do you wish you’d known then?

How We Started

My name is Allison, and I'm the "we" behind Joey for Roo. I’m still working through my postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD that came on after my son was born in February 2019 (more about that in my blog here). In the midst of the really rough early days and nights, I thought about sticking post-it notes on my son; messages of affirmation and encouragement. It occurred to me it would be easier to just put it on the bodysuit itself and that’s how the idea for this little company was born. I was shocked after searching the depths of the internet that nothing like this already existed. Babies can’t read, so why are we targeting their clothing messages for them instead of their parents, who often desperately need a little support? I’m an idealist who can’t stay away from non-profit work and I’ve got my fingers crossed that we can make a difference for parents through some ink and cloth and community.
