Last week we talked about the integral role the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played in shaping Texas State Parks including our own and .

Today, we want to highlight the African American members of the CCC who were often sidelined and assigned the most physically demanding and least desirable tasks yet were no less essential to the parks we cherish today.

The group pictured here is CCC Company #1811 at Bastrop State Park. Their labor, skill, and perseverance helped build the foundation of these beloved spaces, even when recognition was not equally given.

Their story is part of Bastrop County’s story.
