My son Luca turned 10 a couple of weeks ago. He’s off at Grandma camp and when I called him to ask if he liked the roller skates I sent he told he wanted fire alarms instead. 😑

He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 2 years old and has always had his quirks. Which I absolutely adore about him.

He knows all the different types of alarms and how each one sounds. And he’s even memorized what color alarm every store in town has. (Just ask him)

These are the pictures he sent me of his alarms. I mean I wish I could bottle the joy and excitement.

I’ll never totally understand his love for fire alarms. But the loudest way you can show someone you love them…..is to encourage them to be fully themselves.

glimmering like diamonds

Imagine being told that your baby wouldn’t make it.

That she would probably die during the pregnancy.

And then one day she’s 13 and she defied every odd in her way.

And she has the most beautiful heart, and you can’t remember even one day before her.

Imagine that every day together feels like a god damn miracle.

They say cats can see spirits and sense angels. And I never believed any of that until Lilly came along.

Our cat, Mr. Houdini, was 100 percent absolutely completely obsessed with her from pregnancy until his last day on earth.

He never left her side.

He knew all the things we know now. Her entire spirit is heavenly. ✨✨✨✨

Lilly and Luca were born 3 1/2 years apart. It wasn’t intentional.

Lilly’s health was rocky from birth. And Luca was conceived via IVF.

(Not because of fertility issues but because of genetic issues. It took us years to find a genetics lab and specialist that could detect the rare genetic disorder that Lilly has in the embryos we created.)

Lilly was always tiny. Luca was always in the 100000th percentile from birth. Between that and Lilly’s developmental delays It was like having twins for a very very verrryyyyy long time.

At one point I just starting lying to strangers that would ask

“Yes. Yes. They are twins. Cute right?!!!?!!” 😵‍💫

We wouldn’t know “typical” if it fell on our heads. But I came up with systems. And we made it work.

What a wild ride though ya’ll. 🎢

A magical vessel

Gripped at my breasts for
6 years cumulatively

For 120 weeks

We swayed obsessively

at the bus stop
In line at the grocery store
While making rice
standing at the stove

My tired feet
Wide ankles
swelling by the second

A pirate ship
Of treasures

Your naughty giggle
A bright pink mouth babbling
mama.
Mama??
MAMA!!!

The thick scar on my belly
Keeps the memories of us
held in

A deep landmark etching
The words quite visible

I carried you all first

but now

through.
