What was meant to be a cute video of Rigby chomping on carrots captured Rigby in fight or flight mode because of fireworks

For context, Rigby is 10 and she has never displayed FAS towards fireworks before. We just recently moved and unfortunately our new house is in a firework heavy neighborhood and the fireworks were very intense- even I could feel the vibrations from them.

At our old place, we heard them but we did not FEEL them. We had no idea what to expect but we were unprepared to say the least.

What we could do was show our dog that it’s okay to show emotions and that once we finally caught up, it took us a minute, but we got there, we’d do our best to respond to their emotional health and wellbeing the best we can

Once we did this, her chemical levels could finally start to lower and by morning she was her happy, healthy, usual self

Even if you don’t keep up with rescue dog stories, your feed will eventually come across the Miranda Rescue news story. I am not going to get into the details here, because they are much too horrific, but I will make the following comment.

As public trust in rescues continues to erode, understandably so, know that before this case, our trust had already been put to the test by cases similar to it- cases we won’t get into detail on.

It’s why I personally vowed to do two things with our company: one, become a transparency advocate, always pushing for legal means to ensure the highest standard of transparency in animal sheltering and rescue is met and 2. be very selective about the rescues we support monetarily through our drink coffee, help dog program.

Good animal welfare organizations do exist.

Unfortunately, when done right, they often do not have the clout, drama, and emotional exploitation driving donations. There is no constant intake of animals on their last dying breath to survive.

When done right, you’ll see dogs fight because it’s impossible to have a multiple dog household without conflict; you’ll see that most of the day-to-day operations are boring and mundane and so much so that Instagram won’t suggest those stories to you unless the photos are airbrushed and enhanced and the stories are a little exaggerated. When done right, you’ll see normal, average people taking care of animals. When done right, you’ll see your favorite rescue tell you when a dog dies, is humanely euthanized, or is destroyed (there are key differences in all three terms).

I met such a place 4 years ago when Mutts was featuring rescue dogs on our coffee labels.

They are a foundational partner to this day Angels with Misplaced Wings

Here are two dogs from their sanctuary- Saisy who came from APA after years in their care and June who the owner no longer wanted after she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and the breeder was going to destroy if returned

Breaking the status quo involves challenging your own comfortable reasoning on an ideology you might not even be cognizant of

When potholes in your neighborhood aren’t filled, you don’t blame drivers for driving on the streets

Blaming the “public” for problems that can be solved internally within the walls of the shelter slows down or prevents any real change from happening and shelter animals only lose their protections in the long run because the public isn’t performing necessary checks and balances to ensure the system is working properly

When volunteers are fired for speaking up or speaking out, that’s an indication that there is an internal struggle to maintain a status quo and that the shelter is burying public transparency

If everything was on the up and up, there would be nothing to hide

MCAS is a government operated shelter so as a taxpayer and Portland citizen, please, become informed and get involved and provide that much needed oversight

Just know that YOU, the ambiguous “public,” are being blamed for things that are within reason to change

Why is MCAS using AI tools despite community opposition? At a time where data centers threaten Oregon lands and AI threaten the jobs of our artists and photographers, we ask that our government departments are reading their room

This is just another example of taking a shortcut when a shortcut doesn’t need to be taken

Portland is FILLED with incredibly talented photographers. There is no reason for this. Not to mention, it eludes public trust because 1. The dogs don’t look the same in the photo and real life and 2. It’s another way for shelters to hide injuries, disease or other concerns

In my last two slide, you will see sections of a real letter I wrote the Multnomah board of commissioners in 2024 suggesting they work with real photographers to produce better intake photos

When we say there is room for improvement, this is what we mean….

I made that suggestion in 2024 and look where we are. I’m sure I’m not the first. Why resist such a simple yet impactful change?

Hi, real quick, I want to say I appreciate you all for understanding the intense pivoting happening right now between our advocacy posts and our day-to-day operational posts like this one.

We are operating in a very narrow window with the Multnomah County Animal Shelter Director application deadline approaching quickly and no promise that any of our suggestions to the commissioners will be granted.

It’s a delicate balance.

On 6/18, I attended the Multnomah County Comissioner Meeting virtually and gave testimony

I went first and in all my years doing this, I’ve never gone first so I was a little winded (I think you can tell I was a little surprised to be called so soon 😅)

In this testimony, I asked for 3 simple requests:

1: Extend the deadline for applications for the Multnomah County Animal Director position

2. Only consider an outside hire

3. Include a panel with community stakeholders to be included in the interviewing process

I hope the commissioners and chair consider these simple, straightforward recommendations and that we take this opportunity to really get things right this time around

Another Sniffspot unleashed

When I saw it was going to be in the 90’s today, I booked a morning spot ahead of time

This just might be our favorite spot yet: Helvetia Hound Playground off Helvetia Rd. in Hillsboro, OR

The host has added so many fun things to give this spot some extra lift for the dogs

Our only note would be for anyone who is sensitive being close to transmission lines

We will be back and next time, will time it with the hours of the Helvetia Tavern which is right next door

Pokey’s Pet Pantry serves Washington County residents by offering emergency pet food packs, answering emails and fulfilling requests daily, and holding a once a month walk-in event for pet families

Donations are accepted in the lobby at Mutts Coffee under a blue table, from 8-3, 7 days a week

Our biggest need right now is:

🔴 cat litter
🔴 dry dog food containing no chicken, no chicken meal or chicken byproduct
🔴 dry dog food containing no beef, no beef byproduct
🔴 small bags of dry cat food
🔴 harnesses for large and extra large dogs

**all food must be unopened**

We also accept gently used and new toys, clothing, and walking gear.

If items have been gently used, please make sure they are cleaned prior to bringing them to the cafe

**Large items like carriers and bedding- please ask before brining them in. We can not store these items at the shop and are limited on space

Thank you for helping us help pet families in need and being among the very few options for pet families located in Washington County
