Marcus knew the first day was cooked the second he saw a seating chart on the board.

A seating chart.

On day one.

Like school hadn’t even loaded yet and already there were side quests.

He walked in trying to be chill. Not too fast, not too slow. Backpack on one shoulder, because two straps felt like he was trying way too hard. Face calm. Fit decent. Whole vibe: I had a summer, but I’m not about to make it my whole personality.

Then he saw his name.

Second row.

Between the kid who clicks his pen like he’s defusing a bomb and the kid who asks if there’s homework before class is even over.

Across from him?

Last year’s group project.

Not a person. A warning.

The same kid who said, “I got the slideshow,” then disappeared for three weeks and came back with one title slide and a dream.

Marcus sat down and stared at the desk.

This was not the fresh start he ordered.

First day is supposed to be a soft launch. New shoes, clean hoodie, maybe a slightly better version of yourself before everyone remembers who you were in May.

But now he was trapped in second row politics before the announcements even started.

Still, one thing was working.
