What a Wednesday! ☀️📚

It is beyond beautiful in Belfast today. I woke up with a huge smile on my face, and honestly, the day has just kept getting better. Victoria is here with me today, and she even brought lunch: a delicious Asian salad and chopped-up watermelon. 🍉🥗 Now we’re happily cleaning, sorting, pricing, and finding homes on the shelves for another mountain of books.

Sam held down the shop Monday and Tuesday while I was out gathering 10 packages absolutely jam-packed with really good books. They’re all over the place in the best possible way: fiction, history, biography, memoir, art, and plenty of things I haven’t even discovered yet.

🐝 A Lazy, Cooler Sunday at Chase’s! 🐝

It was a little foggy in Belfast this morning, but Main Street is waking up and people are milling about. We’ve already had customers leave with two armloads and even a box of books!

Today’s accidental theme is pretty obvious: BEES! 🍯🐝

The Backyard Beekeeper is a practical introduction to keeping your own hive, while Raising Honeybee Queens dives deeper into raising healthy queens and colonies. The Dancing Bees, by Nobel Prize winner Karl von Frisch, explores the fascinating way bees communicate through movement.

There’s fiction too! Bee Season by Myla Goldberg is a family story centered around a young spelling-bee champion, while Kenneth Oppel’s The Nest takes our bee theme in a much darker, wonderfully creepy direction.

And there are several more buzzing around the shop today. 🐝📚

📚 Happy Saturday from Chase’s Pre-Read Books & More!

It’s another Saturday filled with wonderfully different books at 69 Main Street in Belfast, Maine, and I’m here 10–5 today. These are just a handful of titles making their way onto the shelves, and there really is something for every kind of reader.

A few that caught my eye:

📖 The Chalk Circle Man by Fred Vargas — An unusual and atmospheric French mystery following Commissaire Adamsberg as mysterious blue chalk circles begin appearing around seemingly ordinary objects on the streets of Paris. Then something much more sinister turns up inside one.

📖 Afterwards by Rosamund Lupton — Part psychological suspense, part family drama and part supernatural mystery. After a devastating fire, a mother desperately tries to discover what happened while remaining connected to the daughter she loves.

📖 Grief by Andrew Holleran — A quiet, beautifully written novel about loneliness, loss and human connection. Winner of the Stonewall Book Award, this is one for readers who appreciate thoughtful, emotionally complex fiction.

📖 Living to Tell the Tale by Gabriel García Márquez — The Nobel Prize-winning author looks back at his extraordinary early life, family and experiences in Colombia and reveals some of the real people and places that eventually found their way into his fiction.

📖 The Things We Do for Love by Kristin Hannah — A moving story about family, motherhood, heartbreak and the unexpected ways people can become family to one another.

Happy Friday from Chase’s Pre-Read Books & More! 📚☀️

It’s a beautiful day out on Main Street in downtown Belfast, and I’m spending part of mine doing what seems to be a never-ending job around here: opening boxes, pricing books, sorting them, and finding each one its proper home on the shelves. These ten are just a tiny sampling of what I’m working my way through today, and once again, they’re all over the literary map!

A few that caught my eye:

📖 The Third Translation by Matt Bondurant — An atmospheric literary mystery following an American Egyptologist working at the British Museum who becomes tangled in the secrets surrounding an ancient Egyptian text. History, obsession, academia and intrigue all rolled together.

💕 Good Material by Dolly Alderton — A funny, painfully relatable modern novel about a struggling comedian trying to understand why his relationship ended. The clever part is that eventually we get the other side of the story, too.

🎪 Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen — A wonderfully transporting historical novel set inside a Depression-era traveling circus, complete with romance, danger, unforgettable characters and, of course, an elephant named Rosie.

🌾 Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison — A powerful and difficult Southern novel about poverty, family, abuse and survival, told through the eyes of a young girl growing up in South Carolina. A National Book Award finalist and one that has become a modern classic.

🌎 Primal Myths by Barbara C. Sproul — A fascinating collection of creation stories from cultures around the world, exploring the many different ways human beings have tried to answer the biggest questions: Where did we come from? Why are we here? And how did all of this begin?

And that still leaves everything from Dreyer’s English for the word lovers to mysteries, relationships, parenting and human desire. You really never know what’s going to come out of the next box around here, which is half the fun.

Happy Thursday from Chase’s Pre-Read Books & More! 📚

The books have been coming in faster than I can sort, price, and shelve them lately, and today’s batch is wonderfully all over the place. Fiction, memoir, poetry, history, essays, classics, and books that are nearly impossible to categorize. Basically, my favorite kind of book day.

A few worth pulling off the shelf:

📕 Skippy Dies by Paul Murray — A darkly funny, surprisingly moving novel centered around students and teachers at an Irish boarding school. Skippy’s death happens early, and the novel gradually reveals the complicated friendships, secrets, heartbreaks, and absurdities surrounding it.

📘 Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr — From the author of All the Light We Cannot See, this ambitious novel connects characters separated by centuries, from Constantinople in the 1400s to present-day Idaho and even into the future, all through the survival of an ancient story.

🏠 The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros — A beautiful modern classic told through short vignettes about Esperanza Cordero, a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago and discovering who she is, where she comes from, and the life she hopes to create for herself.

🌳 Unbowed by Wangari Maathai — The remarkable memoir of the Kenyan environmentalist, activist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner who founded the Green Belt Movement and fought for environmental conservation, democracy, and women’s rights.

😂 Born a Crime by Trevor Noah — Funny, sharp, and often deeply moving stories from Noah’s childhood in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa, where his very existence as the child of a Black mother and white father was once literally against the law.

And that’s just scratching the surface. There’s Jamaica Kincaid, Ted Hughes, Prince Harry, Jess Walter, Owen Parry, Andy Field, The Butchering Art and plenty more scattered throughout the shop waiting to find their proper shelves.

📚 BONUS BOOK POST: NONFICTION! 📚

A little reminder for all the readers who wander into the shop and ask, “Do you have nonfiction?” Oh, do we ever! 😂

We have just about as much nonfiction as we do fiction, covering everything from history, science and psychology to farming, food, spirituality, health, biography, current affairs and those wonderfully strange subjects you didn’t know you wanted to read about until you spotted the book on the shelf.

Happy Wednesday from Chase’s Pre-Read Books & More! 📚☀️

Sam held down the fort Monday and Tuesday and did a great job, so today is officially the beginning of my work week. And I’m starting it with TEN boxes of books I picked up yesterday! Just for fun, I reached into each box and randomly pulled out one book. This is what I got, and I love how completely different they all are.

A few that caught my eye:

🏚️ Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia — A glamorous young woman travels to an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico after receiving a desperate letter from her cousin. What she finds is a creepy old house, an even creepier family, and secrets that become increasingly strange and sinister. Gothic, atmospheric and wonderfully weird. 🌎 The Known World by Edward P. Jones — Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this powerful historical novel takes place in antebellum Virginia and centers on a formerly enslaved Black man who becomes a landowner and, remarkably, a slaveholder himself. It explores an often-overlooked and deeply complicated part of American history. (National Book Foundation⁠)

🇰🇷 Pachinko by Min Jin Lee — A sweeping multigenerational family story following a Korean family through decades of love, hardship, migration, sacrifice and survival. One of those big novels you can disappear into.

⚔️ Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong — Fantasy, romance, political intrigue and deadly games collide in a kingdom where some people can actually jump from one body to another. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, this one looks like quite the ride. (Simon & Schuster⁠)

And that’s only four books out of ten randomly pulled from ten boxes. Now comes one of my favorite parts of the job: figuring out what I have, pricing everything, and finding each book its proper home somewhere in the shop.

Beautiful Sunday in Belfast! 📚☀️ I’m here 11–4 today at Chase’s Pre-Read Books & More, 69 Main Street, and there’s another wonderfully eclectic batch of books waiting to find new homes.

BONUS POETRY POST! 📚❤️

Apparently the poetry gods decided we needed even more poetry today, because another batch just came through the door at Chase’s Pre-Read Books & More!

And I have to say, I’m especially taken with these old issues of Poetry magazine. They’re published by the Poetry Foundation in Chicago, and the magazine itself has been around since 1912. Each issue is basically a little time capsule of contemporary poetry, and the cover art alone makes them pretty darn cool.

There are some wonderful books mixed in too: Pablo Neruda’s Love Poems for the romantics, William Butler Yeats for the classics, 101 Famous Poems for anyone wanting a sampler of the greats, and Looking Back by Diane H. Schetky, a collection of new and selected poems.

So, poetry lovers out there in the real world scrolling through the virtual one… come browse! You never know when a few lines written years ago are going to find you at exactly the right moment.
