🚤 Torch Lake & Chain of Lakes Boaters — Safety First This Weekend! 🛶
It’s National Safe Boating Week (May 17–23), and with sunny skies on the way, we know the boats, kayaks, and SUPs will be out in full force.
BUT — the water temps on Torch Lake and throughout the Chain of Lakes are still dangerously cold. Falling in, even on a warm day, can lead to cold shock, hypothermia, and even death in minutes.
🧊 Cold Water = Cold Facts:
Water below 70°F can seriously impair breathing, coordination, and survival.
Most people lose muscle control in under 10 minutes.
Without a life jacket, you may not have time to react.
👥 Make a Safety Plan Before You Launch:
✔️ Wear a life jacket — always. No exceptions.
✔️ Dress for the water temp, not the air temp.
✔️ Tell someone your float plan — where you’re going and when you’ll return.
✔️ Stay sober and alert — alcohol and cold water don’t mix.
✔️ Keep a whistle, dry bag, and phone in a waterproof case handy.
The Clam Shack at DeWitt Marine will be open all weekend!
Grab your snacks, fuel, and life jackets for all ages — infant to adult. We're here to help keep your weekend safe and fun!
Let’s kick off boating season responsibly and make sure everyone comes home safe.
🌊 Enjoy the beauty of the lakes — and respect their power.
