My daughter Grace, looking radiant on her wedding day

We purchased the ivory Georgette several months ago but she wasn’t sure how she wanted her dress to look - she only knew she wanted it to look soft and flowing. In the meantime I made a practice version of a princess seam bodice so I would have a pattern that fit her. Three weeks before the wedding she finally found an inspo photo!! And I had my work cut out for me. She wanted soft gathers across the bodice. I had created something similar before and knew the theory of how to make it work. But there were quite a few late nights and redrafted versions before it came together!! She was getting really nervous that she would have to wear a thrifted dress!! The dress was finalized five days before the wedding.

Georgette and white poly lining from Good’s Store
Lace “cuff” from

I used multiple patterns to create this dress:
Back bodice Butterick
altered to have a square neckline
Front bodice lining and overlay self drafted
Skirt
Sleeve Butterick

This is why there’s been radio silence on my account!! After months of planning, designing and sewing; here are my three favorite costumes from the show!
Special thanks to photographer for his amazing skills in capturing this image as well as his kind words…
“The TASD has an amazing treasure within its “family.” It’s priceless value is expressed in a thousands small and large ways. Putting a musical production together is one such example and this image encompasses the presence of many such treasures; I wish to highlight one specific one that made this moment on stage dazzling even as it was subliminal. The costume design for each of these girls is a custom piece of art. It’s a sheer joy to be able to finally capture this in a way that everyone can see the detail and tailored talent that went into these outfits...Bravo to Ms Long! You helped this production sparkle!”

I came across this free ruffle top pattern from and wanted to give it a try! This yellow striped cotton fabric from Goodwill was the perfect weight of shirting fabric. However it wasn’t a large enough piece to complete the pattern as drafted! So instead of the large balloon sleeves I substituted the sleeve from

I also didn’t include the neck ruffle - as it refused to cooperate and lay flat. I chose to finish it with self made bias tape applied to the outside!

This lovely young lady was a program attendant at a late summer wedding. She was asked to wear a chocolate colored dress. This is the design we created using multiple patterns mashed together as well as several adaptations! The crisscross bodice is butterick b6893, the flutter chiffon sleeve is butterick b5030, skirt is simplicity s9013, and the chiffon draped over skirt is a modified version from butterick b4657 (swipe to see the inspiration photo)

I’ve had this dark peach crushed velvet fabric from since last holiday season and never knew what to make! Inspiration finally hit me this fall:
from PDF Ellie and Mac Sewing Pattern Group
This pattern is really easy to do when following the detailed instructions. I added approximately 18” to the original knee length pattern and also hacked it to have a lined bodice. Another change was to make the dress with self drafted long sleeves!
I’m really happy with how it turned out and look forward to wearing this dress at an upcoming holiday event!
