📻 A Little Zenith Challenge for Our Radio Friends!

We currently have these two beautiful Zenith consoles here at FYLP Restorations.

On the Right is a 1939 Zenith 9S365, commonly known as the “Stars and Stripes” model.

On the Left is a 1938 Zenith 12S266, a very desirable 12-tube shutter-dial Zenith.

Both are impressive radios. Both are highly collectible. But here's the question:

🤔 Which one do you think is the rarer radio?

And, more importantly...

Do you know WHY?

Take a good look at the photo - there's a clue hiding in plain sight.

We're not giving away the answer just yet! Drop your guess in the comments, and we'll reveal the story behind the rarer one in our next post.

Soft restoration on a vintage Zenith stereo. No need for stripping or refinishing this record player and radio combo, a little touchup went a long way.

What do you think?

Remember that Grundig 7041 radio we just posted about? Here’s what was hiding inside. 🎶

This Perpetuum-Ebner REX record changer is the turntable from that very same Grundig - and it had quite a story of its own.

Before coming to FYLP Restorations, the record changer had already been looked at by another repair center. Their conclusion? It couldn't be fixed.

We saw things a little differently. 😉

Years of age, neglect, and deterioration had taken their toll. The original rubber platter mat was dry-rotted and badly cracked, the cosmetics were tired, and the mechanism needed some serious attention.

But "can't be fixed" isn't always the end of the story.

The old deteriorated platter mat was removed and replaced with a soft, dark green felt surface that beautifully complements the original textured finish. The deck was thoroughly cleaned and restored, and the Perpetuum-Ebner mechanism was brought back to working order.

Just as importantly, the motor was properly serviced rather than simply coaxed into running. On equipment of this age, getting a motor to turn is one thing-properly cleaning, servicing, and lubricating it so it can operate smoothly, reliably and at the proper speed is another. That's the difference between getting something to work and actually restoring it.

And yes - it works again. 🎵

When we restore a piece like this Grundig 7041, we don't stop with what you can see on the outside. The components inside are part of its history too, and sometimes the pieces others have given up on are the most satisfying ones to bring back.

One radio. One record changer. One second opinion that made all the difference.

On the Bench at FYLP Restorations - Grundig 7041 W/3D

This Grundig 7041 W/3D came into the shop for repair, and once we got into it, it was clear that this one was going to need some extra attention. The AM dial string is broken and the FM isn't far behind.

The chassis is in pretty rough shape, and the dial back plate had seen much better days. The original paint was flaking and falling off, with rust taking over in several areas. Rather than leave it that way, we removed the back plate and gave it a proper restoration.

➡️ Removed and completely stripped the dial back plate
➡️ Sandblasted away the rust and failing paint
➡️ Primed and repainted the plate
➡️ Cleaned up the k***s and push buttons
➡️ Reassembled the dial mechanism and hardware

The before-and-after photos really tell the story. What started as a rusty, peeling back plate is looking like it belongs in this Grundig again.

And this is just part of the job - the chassis itself still needs all the capacitors replaced along with a few burnt resistors replaced. Plenty of work ahead before this radio is ready to play again.

One piece at a time, bringing another classic radio back to life.

After a few weeks of waiting, calibrating, and testing, we now have our new laser up and running!

We'll be opening up new radio back orders very soon. Thank you to everyone who's been patiently waiting. Keep an eye out for when we are officially taking on new orders.

Naturally... I couldn't resist making something for myself first to try it out. I took my YETI tumbler and engraved it with a vintage Philco "Factory-Supervised Service" emblem, recreated from an original technician's uniform patch. I love how the engraving came out, and it got me thinking: is this something you all would be interested in?

Leave an interaction on this post if you would be interested in any of the below!

👍 Vintage radio logos (Philco, Zenith, RCA, Motorola, etc.)
❤️ Your name or a completely custom design
😲 Business logos or gifts
💬 Something else? Tell us in the comments!

We would love to hear your ideas. This machine opens up a whole new world of possibilities, and your feedback will help decide what we offer next.
