Sometimes, we go for easy hikes. Other times, we do the Mount Williamson - Mount Tyndall double.
Those two 14ers are just the right mix of fun and a little bit sufferfest. Camping up there is definitely worth hauling all the gear over Shepherd Pass. The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular!

Keep in mind that both mountains are only accessible via scrambling or climbing routes. There are no trails up there.

The Garnet Lake outlet is currently carrying an impressive amount of bright green, stringy filamentous algae downstream. It wasn’t noticeable earlier this summer, making it a curious high-country observation.

Filamentous algae are made up of microscopic cells that grow in long, thread-like strands. They attach to rocks and thrive where there is sunlight, flowing water, and enough nutrients to support photosynthesis. Even in cold, clear alpine streams, these conditions can produce surprisingly abundant growth.

The amount of algae can change throughout the season as water temperature, flow, sunlight, and nutrient availability change.
