How Elmers Got Started!
Elmers Inc (originally known as Elmers Imports for 11 years) opened around 1986 by a local couple Elmer and Lucile Stecklein. They started with a full line of tires. Thousands of tires of all kinds for every type of machine. They soon added parts, helmets, goggles, leathers, fairings, clothing and so much more. Elmer organized it the way he wanted and he could tell you what row each item was on and how many of the items there were. He could send customers back to “row 3 and go over about 5 piles and that’s the tire you need.” Elmers Inc was a leader in the industry. They were open year round and served all the Motorsports and Powersports customers. Elmer built a valuable friendship with Clyde Meyer, a Parts Unlimited Representative and in turn became a value friend to all the Stecklein family. Elmer and Lucile ran a fair booth for the store during the early years as well. They also provided Golf Carts for parades around the area. One of the most fun times was providing the golf carts for a Presidential Parade in Twin Falls Idaho for President Ronald Reagan. Another opportunity came when Walt, who was the area representative for the Greenball Corporation, came and signed Elmers up to be the Northwest Area Dealer for Greenball. For that company, it was the ATV/UTV Dirt Devil Tires and Dirt Commanders plus all sizes and types of Lawn and Garden Tires, Towmaster Trailer Tires, and such. For Parts Unlimited, the AMS Swamp Fox Tires were just out for ATV/UTV use. They were and still are an all around excellent tire for All Terrains. I wouldn’t even be able to count how many of those tires my parents sold at Elmers. They sold specialty tires such as airplane tires for stores in Montana and ordered in pivot line tires for farmers. They have a UNIK International line of Leather Jackets, Vest, Chaps and such. They have worked directly with the Titan Tire Company, Carlisle Tires, Golden West Tires, and probably companies I don’t even know about. If anyone anywhere needed a tire, they called Elmer and he’d find it for them. Thank you dad and mom for all your hard work and dedication to Elmers Inc. It wouldn’t be here today if it hadn’t been for the both of you!
Elmer had a unique way of adding up the sales slips in his head. And, not just one or two lines but could do 6-7 rows and calculate the sales tax in his head and add it all up and be spot on every time. Another unique thing about Elmer was keeping track of inventory. All the tires and parts and such were kept in the same place and he had memorized what was in the store and could keep track of when he needed to order more in. He kept a running inventory count in his head. He was amazing that way.
Lucile would organize the helmets and clothing Elmer brought in and was the bookkeeper for the store. For many years, she made a catalog and sent out to dealers.
