Chad Nakano was born and raised in San Francisco and always had a fascination for colors and patterns. Throughout his life he played sports and had a love for the game, which drove him to create an athletic inspired company. Laurie Wright was raised in Stillwater, Minnesota and had a love for fashion, art and culture. She attended the University of Minnesota and shortly after college she moved to

San Francisco, where her love for fashion became a job. In 2012, Chad and Laurie met in a bar and now five years later they have created Modern Envy Apparel with the following mission and motto:

We're in the BLUE RIBBON BOOK this year!

If you've been to the Minnesota State Fair, you know the Blue Ribbon Book is a pretty special part of Fair tradition. So seeing Modern Envy Apparel included this year is something we're incredibly proud of.

After 10 years at the Fair, it's pretty amazing to look back at how far we've come. What started as a small business and a dream has grown into something we get to share with thousands of people every year.

We're so grateful to the Minnesota State Fair community for welcoming us year after year and to all of YOU who continue to support our small business. ❤️

20 Days Until the Minnesota State Fair!

What does the Main Gate mean to you?

For some, it's the moment the Minnesota State Fair officially begins. The excitement kicks in, the crowds start moving, and you know you're finally inside the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

For me, it's so much more.

Every year, when I walk through the Main Gate for the first time, I usually get a few tears in my eyes.

My grandpa and my dad both worked at the Minnesota State Fair for more than 40 years. The Fair wasn't just a place they worked—it became a huge part of our family's story.

Now that both my dad and grandpa are gone, walking through those gates brings back so many memories.

I wish I could walk through that gate with my dad one more time. I wish I could tell him about everything we've built and let him see that the tradition he and my grandpa were such a big part of is still going.

And then I remember...

It is going.

Our daughter is now the 4th generation of our family to live at the Minnesota State Fair for all 12 days.

That means more to me than I can put into words.

The Main Gate isn't just an entrance to the Fair for me. It's a connection to my grandpa and my dad—a reminder of the generations who came before us and the traditions they passed down.

And now, we get to pass them down again.

Four generations. One incredible tradition. And two very special people who will always be a part of it.

3 Weeks = 21 Days Until the Minnesota State Fair!

The countdown is getting real... we're only THREE weeks away from Opening Day!

And in just two weeks, we'll begin building our booth.

What many people don't know is that our booth isn't pre-built—we literally build it from the ground up.

It all starts with pipe and drape, and from there we build walls, create displays, hang lighting, install trim work, arrange merchandise, add photos, and carefully craft a space that tells the story of Modern Envy Apparel.

Months of planning go into every detail. We spend countless hours designing the layout, deciding where every product belongs, and thinking about how you will experience our booth when you walk in. Then it takes us five full days to bring that vision to life.

Right now, we're in the final stages of selecting products, fine-tuning displays, and putting the finishing touches on this year's booth.

Every year, we challenge ourselves to make it even better than the last because we want your visit to be more than just shopping—we want it to be an experience.

Hang tight... we've got so much more to share over the next three weeks, and we can't wait to show you what we've been working on.

22 Days Until the Minnesota State Fair!

As we get closer to opening day, we've been taking a walk down memory lane.

➡️ Swipe through the photos! We have so many incredible memories from the past 11 years that it was hard to choose just a few.

These photos tell the story of our journey—from our early days with a much smaller booth to where we are today. Every year has brought new products, new challenges, new friendships, and thousands of conversations with amazing customers.

Looking back, we're reminded that this business has never been just about selling apparel. It's about the people we've met, the memories we've made, and the community that has supported us year after year.

This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate our 11th year at the Minnesota State Fair. What started as a dream has grown into something we could have never imagined, and it's all because of you.

To everyone who has stopped by our booth, purchased a shirt or hat, shared a kind word, or brought your family and friends back to see us—thank you. You've been part of our story, and we're so grateful.

The Merry-Go-Round

Some traditions never go out of style.
The Merry-Go-Round has been part of the Minnesota State Fair experience for generations and is one of the fair's longest-standing rides. For so many families, it's where memories begin—from a baby's very first ride to adults who still can't resist taking one more spin.

Watching Kailani ride the carousel brings me right back to being a kid. I can still remember my mom and dad taking us on the Merry-Go-Round every year. It wasn't just a ride—it was part of our family tradition.

Now, seeing the next generation light up with that same excitement reminds me that some of the best State Fair memories aren't about what's new—they're about the traditions we pass down.
Whether you're 2 or 92, the Merry-Go-Round has a way of making you feel like a kid again. ❤️

🎡 24 Days Until the Minnesota State Fair! 🎡

As we continue our countdown to the Great Minnesota Get-Together, we wanted to introduce you to two of the people who help make Modern Envy Apparel what it is today.

Meet Chloe and Owen. ❤️

Chloe has been with us for 10 years and is the heart of our front-of-house operations. She works alongside Laurie, helping customers, managing inventory, merchandising our booth, and making sure everything looks its best. If you've shopped with us at the fair, there's a good chance Chloe has helped you find the perfect shirt or hat.

Owen has been part of our team for 9 years and keeps everything running behind the scenes. Working alongside Chad, he handles production, printing, inventory, and booth build-outs—making sure every order is produced with care and every event is ready to go.

People often ask what makes Modern Envy Apparel different, and the answer is simple—our people.

Without Chloe and Owen, we wouldn't be where we are today. Their loyalty, dedication, and pride in what they do have helped build this brand right alongside us. They're more than employees—they're family, and they've played a huge role in making Modern Envy Apparel what it is today.

To Chloe and Owen, thank you for your hard work, your commitment, and for believing in this dream with us. We truly couldn't do it without you.

For us, the Minnesota State Fair isn't just about getting our booth ready...

It's about the traditions we've been making for a lifetime.

One tradition we never miss?

A GRANDSTAND CONCERT!

There's just something magical about sitting outside on a warm summer night, surrounded by thousands of people, listening to live music. To us, it's the perfect way to end a day at the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

My love for Grandstand concerts started long before Modern Envy Apparel.

Since my dad worked at the Minnesota State Fair for 42 years, we practically grew up there. When I was in 6th grade, I was completely obsessed with New Kids on the Block. My dad knew it, and he surprised my best friend Stacy and me with 5th-row tickets.

I still remember every second of that night. I was convinced life couldn't get any better!

A few years later, when I was 16 years old, I started working at the State Fair too. My sister and I took tickets at the old Grandstand, which meant I had the chance to see some incredible artists perform. Watching The Beach Boys while working there is still one of my favorite memories.

Now, thanks to Modern Envy Apparel, we've created a new tradition. Every year, somewhere between long days at our booth, Chad and I make time to catch a Grandstand show together.

Some traditions never get old… and for us, taking a ride down the Giant Slide is one of them!

Every year, it’s a must-do. Whether it’s racing each other to the bottom or just laughing the whole way down, it’s one of those classic Minnesota State Fair memories.

One of the best parts of the Minnesota State Fair?

For Kailani, there's no question... it's cotton candy!

Every family has that one fair tradition they look forward to, and for us, it's watching her eyes light up as she walks around with a giant cloud of cotton candy that's almost as big as she is. Those are the moments that become the memories.
