Today we had the privilege of hosting local Blanco author Ruth E. Stitt for a book signing and presentation of her remarkable historical fiction novel, When the World Was Broken.

The story begins with real letters passed down through Ruth's family between her grandparents, who had already immigrated to America, and their cousins who remained trapped in Berlin during World War II. Drawing from excerpts of these letters, Ruth crafted a historical fiction novel that brings to life the fear, hope, heartbreak, and determination of a family desperately trying to reunite across an ocean during one of history's darkest times.

One of the moments that gave me goosebumps was when Ruth shared:

"If someone does not write this story, it is going to end up a forgotten book of letters."

Instead, those letters have become something much greater — a story of remembrance, resilience, and family that can now be passed on to future generations.

A wonderful reminder that meaningful work often requires perseverance.

Perhaps my favorite insight from Ruth was:

"There is a difference between writing history and writing a story. It becomes personal. You can feel what Lina was feeling as she was trying to get her cousins out of Berlin."

And that's exactly what makes When the World Was Broken so compelling. It doesn't just tell us what happened — it invites us to feel it.

I won't spoil the ending, but if you love family stories, historical fiction, World War II history, or books that stay with you long after the last page, this one belongs on your reading list.

Thank you, Ruth, for preserving these voices and reminding us that every family has stories worth telling. ❤️
