When some people get chemotherapy, it can cause sores to form in the mouth. Doing good oral care can be helpful for preventing these sores… But sometimes the chemotherapy can still cause painful spots in the mouth that can make it hard to eat and drink.

Your doctor can prescribe magic mouthwash, which has a numbing medication in it to allow those area areas to be less uncomfortable so that you can eat and drink. Some people feel like the magic mouthwash taste bad or don’t like the way it makes their entire mouth feel numb.

If you have a few individual spots of discomfort… It can be helpful to do a spot treatment by dipping a Q-tip into the medication and dabbing the medication directly on those painful areas in your mouth.

What do you think about the flavor of magic mouthwash?

Most Infusion rooms will allow you to bring a second person with you to the Infusion. They will also be required to be an adult as kids are not appropriate to be in the chemotherapy area.

Many infusion rooms are locked departments, so your guest may need to ask to be let in if they exit and want to reenter.

Do you usually bring someone with you?

It is really common for people on chemotherapy or immunotherapy to experience dry mouth. Many people find it helpful to use a humidifier, suck on sugar-free lozenges, perform good oral care, and hydrate well.

What have you found? Works well for managing dry mouth?

Have you ever seen these at your infusion room and wondered what these are? Many people who get chemo have a port-a-cath and find that it is uncomfortable for the seatbelt in the car to rub against it… so some crafty person created the seatbelt port pillow!

This was not invented by me- but they can be really helpful! This particular one was made by my mom and a crafting group she is a part of. Many craft clubs will donate these to infusion rooms so people with ports can use them to be more comfortable in the car.

Has anyone ever used one?

What do I do to lower my stress after work? Come home to my sweet husband and my millennial granny habit… doing puzzles!

I love being an oncology nurse and giving education on chemo, but I also very much enjoy a silly spooky puzzle!

What do you do after a stressful day to unwind?

What are the main side effects from immunotherapy? The main one we see would be fatigue!

We are also keeping a close eye out for any inflammation that can occur if your body starts to attack its own self cells. We call those the ‘itises’. Inflammation the the liver= hepatitis. Inflammation to the gut- diverticulitis… etc

But generally side effects are well tolerated for many people!

Has anyone been on an immunotherapy?

While every chemo can have different side effects, we do find there are some that are more common with chemotherapy.

Chemo can cause nausea/vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, some changes in blood counts, neuropathy for some, and constipation or diarrhea.

The good news is, the research that has been done has given doctors some better guidelines to find ways to reduce side effects that people experience. Our hope is to give you all the tools in your tool box so you have minimal side effects.

What have you found to be most common for side effects with chemo?

When people are getting chemo, it’s normal for them to feel tired or fatigue. Your body is working hard to process medications and repair your good self cells.

I usually recommend for people to listen to your body and also to take breaks between activities to give your body some time to recover. It can absolutely be frustrating to not be able to do everything, but try to give yourself some grace.

I was discussing fatigue with a friend 😉 earlier this week and they said they found it helped reduce their fatigue if they had bone broth daily.

What are your tricks for helping reduce fatigue?
