Revealed yesterday on the Volante (soon to be Outwrld) discord server, here is the logo and name of my new brand!

Outwrld is an 'all new' clothing brand that will carry forward the core values of Volante, but will also be a fresh start. New designs, new business model and release cadence, new universe :: Same attention to detail, same quality standards, same community focus.

Work wear from other worlds.

Joining me in running this new brand as XO is Ray. Ray was a long time fan and customer who reached out shortly after Volante closed and offered to help me build back up. We've been tinkering away for the last 6 months, zeroing in on what Outwrld can be, designing new products, establishing our team dynamic. He excels at operationalizing my wild ideas, while also adding his own to the mix.

Last log for this week. I've had a lot of my mind these last few months. I want this new brand to be a fresh start, but I can't help but compare it to Volante because, well, the comparisons are unavoidable.

It's not going to be different for the sake of being different, but rather because there's an opportunity to take what I've learned and apply it without being beholden to the expectations we set with Volante Design.

Next week I'll talk more about what *isn't* changing.

I had to edit this one down a little bit, but the core of what I wanted to say is here.

Inspiration is a funny thing. I feel like nothing anyone does is not derivative in some way. Even watching my 3 year old kids, everything they start is somehow influenced by their past experiences, however narrow that scope might be. But there's a difference between explicit and implicit inspiration. I've made a lot of garments that "look like that thing" and I want to shift more into garments that "feel like that thing". If that makes sense.

August was full of travel for me. Mostly with family, but it was all kicked off with an impromptu trip to NYC to attend Texworld. I wasn't going to go this year, but the owners of our main factory in China invited me to dinner, so I got in the car. Let me tell you, we had a 2 hour meal/meeting and I learned so much about their operation and experience, and then I checked out their booth when the show opened.

They aren't a "large" factory, and operate out of a "medium sized" city (ONLY 9m people), but they have a wide range of capacities for production that we had never considered. It got my head spinning and I'm excited to explore the options. Absolutely worth the drive.

An era of discovery. 

Volante Design has closed and I am in the process of trimming down my operation to only the most essential tools and a space that's about half the size of the Volante studio. But what will I do with this space? 

I'm going to launch a new brand. I love making things. I love designing clothing and useful things for daily life. I love building worlds. I intend to keep doing that. 

Despite having to close Volante Design, I think of it as nothing less than a success. We were profitable at the end of almost every year in business and we survived 13 years, which is longer than at least 30% of all new businesses in the USA. But more importantly, we have an incredible, supportive community, and the rate that you cleared out the Volante warehouse proves to me that I should keep trying.

However, I want to take my time. I want to make sure that I can apply every lesson I have learned from Volante Design, and this time set up something even stronger. I have some ideas that I'm extremely excited about, and I have a renewed energy to build. I'm not ready to share the specifics of this new brand, but I want to take you all along on my journey. 

That's what this channel will be used for from this point on. I will record my thoughts, my design philosophies, my process, and everything I have learned from Volante that I want to apply to the next thing. 

When the time comes, the new brand will have its own social media channels and mailing list, and I will invite you all to follow along there in addition to here, where I will continue to post about my process even after the new brand launches.

Volante Design is closed now, but I, David Volante, am already pouring the foundation for the next thing. It will be very different, but also familiar.
