The School of Fashion Design is the only educational institution in New England dedicated exclusively to the study of fashion design. We provide students with a solid foundation in apparel design and construction, and the skills required for a successful career in fashion. We value the fine craft of a well-made garment and believe that fashion design is a learned skill that can be mastered through education and disciplined practice. Renowned for our teaching expertise and technical rigor of our professional skills training, SFD is a private, nonprofit studio school offering our signature Certificate in Fashion Design. πŸͺ‘ Construction Clothing 1 instructs students on how to cut, hand sew, and use an industrial machine! Students are also trained in lining, pressing, detailing, and finishing. 🧡 Pattern Making 1 introduces students to the principles, techniques and practice of draft flat patterns for women's garments! 🌟 Meet Lisa Micheels, one of SFD instructors!
🧡 Lisa has extensive experience as a theatrical costumer working in professional theatres across the country. She has taught fashion and theatre-based classes in the Boston area since 1989. In 1992, she launched her Very Eclectic Clothing line of hand-painted clothing and accessories. Today, Very Eclectic is a thriving collection of hand-painted scarves, yarn, shawl pins, and buttons sold online and at fine craft and fiber shows throughout the Northeast.

⭐ Congratulations to SFD alumnus Joe Carl, who is celebrating 10 years of teaching at SFD!
πŸͺ‘ Joe is a skilled fashion artist and educator, holding a Certificate in Fashion Design from the School of Fashion Design (2005), a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from MassArt (2015), and a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion from Savannah College of Art and Design (2019).
🧡 With expertise in couture garment construction and pattern making developed during his tenure at Daniel Faucher Couture (2005-2016), Joe now shares his knowledge as a visiting lecturer at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Framingham State University, and the School of Fashion Design focusing on advanced clothing construction, pattern drafting, and design theory. He is dedicated to making fashion design more accessible through clear, comprehensive technical instructions and step by step instructions.

🌟 Meet Jay Calderin, Founder & Executive Director of Boston Fashion Week, and one of SFD's senior instructors!
🧡 The Boston Globe calls Jay β€œa budding designer’s best friend.” His work as a fashion designer has graced the pages of Vogue and Elle magazines as well as the New York Times Sunday Style section. Jay founded Boston Fashion Week and has served as the organization's Executive Director since 1995.
πŸ‚ During Fall 2026, Jay will be teaching History of Costume, 2D & 3D Design, and Fashion Sketching I ! All of these classes will be online!
πŸ“ History of Costume dives into costumes from ancient to modern times, with a focus on contemporary design and theatrical costuming. Students will study the fabrics, colors, styles, cultural and psychological impacts of these garments throughout history. | TUESDAYS (online), 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM
