Fun fact: An aspen grove isn't actually a forest of individual trees; it's one organism with a single root system, making them one of the largest organisms on Earth … and, come fall, possibly the prettiest.

Bears Ears National Monument in Utah was the first national monument in the United States created at the urging of Tribal Nations, and the first where a coalition of Tribal Nations collaborated with federal agencies to craft a management plan for a national monument. But long before it was a monument, it was home, and it remains a living homeland today.

Hopi, Zuni, Diné, Ute, and other Indigenous peoples have lived in and cared for these lands since time immemorial. And the five Tribal Nations that came together to lead the modern effort to protect Bears Ears—the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni and Ute Indian Tribe—have worked to safeguard these sacred places for their communities and future generations, while helping ensure people can continue to climb, trail run and recreate respectfully.

It's our responsibility to stand with Tribal leaders against the illegal proclamation to shrink Bears Ears by roughly 91%, exposing thousands of culturally significant sites, traditional plants and medicines, and an ecologically critical landscape to extractive industries.

Please consider supporting the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, which works to safeguard and steward Bears Ears through the collective leadership of sovereign Tribes. Visit https://pat.ag/FB/IndigenousPeoplesDay to learn more or make a donation.
