Rainbow series: Topaz

Topaz is a beautiful crystal that comes in many different colors including white, peach, golden-brown to yellow, purple, and pink. Because topaz is incredibly hard (ranking an 8 on the Mohs scale), it is highly resistant to chemical and physical breakdown. When the host rocks weather away over millions of years, the durable topaz crystals wash down from mountainsides and are carried by streams. They eventually settle into riverbeds and ocean margins.

Rainbow Series: Black Tourmaline

Black Tourmaline (also called Schorl) is a variety of Tourmaline found all over the world—especially in gem-bearing pegmatites—that is rich in iron which gives it its opaque black color. The presence of Black Tourmaline chunks in rock indicates the potential close proximity of more valuable, gem-grade crystals like Elbaite Tourmaline and Beryl.

Black Tourmaline is a powerful protective stone.

Rainbow series: Fire Opal

A fire opal is a rare and unique variety of opal famous for its vibrant, fiery body color ranging from glowing yellow to deep, blazing red which is caused by iron. Unlike traditional opals, they are highly prized for their deep saturation of base color and can be either completely transparent or have a brilliant prismatic play-of-color. Fire opals are formed in the depths of ancient volcanoes. Rainwater seeps into the still-hot volcanic lava, picking up dissolved silica and traces of iron oxide (like rust). Trapped in underground cavities, the water slowly evaporates over millions of years, leaving behind hardened, microscopic silica spheres that arrange in orderly rows and columns that interact with light in a unique way to produce opal’s signature play-of-color.

Rainbow series: Citrine

Citrine is formed when silicon dioxide (quartz) crystallizes with trace amounts of iron. Its signature yellow or golden color comes from geothermal heating and natural radiation, which alter the oxidation state of the iron. Because natural citrine is rare, the vast majority of stones on the market are created through artificial heat treatment. The stone begins as purple amethyst or smoky quartz (quartz naturally containing iron impurities). Miners or jewelers intentionally heat the amethyst in a kiln or oven to temperatures between 470°C and 560°C. The intense heat changes the oxidation state of the iron ions, causing the purple color to shift permanently into the vibrant golden-orange, or sometimes brownish-red, colors commonly seen in jewelry.

Natural citrine primarily forms as solitary, pointed crystals. Heat-treated citrine is often sold in large, jagged clusters because amethyst grows in clusters. Intensely bright orange, vivid yellow, or deep amber stones with opaque white bases are almost always heat-treated. Natural citrine usually features a softer, more uniform pale yellow or champagne coloring often with gray, smoky tones.

Rainbow series: Scapolite

Scapolite is formed primarily in metamorphic environments through the alteration of pre-existing minerals. It is a tectosilicate mineral, which means it has a similar atomic structure to Quartz and Feldspar. Its name derives from the Greek words skapos (“rod” or “shaft”) and lithos (“stone”), a reference to the mineral’s distinct elongated, prismatic crystal habit (shape). High-quality transparent scapolite gemstones are sourced primarily from locations like Tanzania, Madagascar, Brazil, and Myanmar. It is believed to provide mental clarity, promote self-resilience, and inspire motivation to accomplish personal goals.

Rainbow series: Libyan desert glass

Libyan Desert Glass is a rare, naturally occurring, pale yellow-to-golden tektite formed 29 million years ago when a giant meteorite impacted the eastern Sahara. It symbolizes solar power, spiritual awakening, and eternal rebirth.

Like Moldavite, LDG is a natural glass (lacking an orderly crystal structure) and tektite, but formed in a different location on Earth during a different meteor impact.

Rainbow series: Peridot

Which piece was your favorite?

Peridot is one of the only gemstones formed deep within the Earth’s mantle rather than the crust. It is created under extreme heat and pressure, roughly 20 to 55 miles underground, and is transported to the surface in basalt rock by explosive volcanic eruptions. Some extremely rare peridot crystals have an extraterrestrial origin. They are occasionally found preserved inside pallasite meteorites (stony-iron meteorites) that have fallen to Earth.

Peridot is the gemological name for the mineral Olivine.
