Tom has actively been collecting license plates for 28 years but plate watching has always been in his blood as a natural extension of a love of automobiles and numbers. Colorado plates are his primary collecting interest, seeking Colorado plates of every year and type through trade and purchase. specific needs. Tom joined the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association in 1982 and has been active at both the international and local level. He served as Vice President of ALPCA and was Editor of ALPCA’s magazine. Locally, Tom was Secretary/Treasurer of Rocky Mountain Regional branch of ALPCA for nineteen years. Tom has co-authored three books on license plates. Tom is now retired, and he and Margaret have teamed up to sell expired plates on eBay (Automobile License Plate Store) using the eBay ID of LicpL8s. We sometimes buy collections or accumulations of license plates that complement our current inventory. Let us know if you have something to sell. 1941 Bolivia License Plate Number Tag - Tarija

The plate was issued in Tarija, a southern department in Bolivia bordering Argentina and Paraguay. The letter “P” stands for Particular (Private), indicating this plate was assigned to a privately owned passenger vehicle.Older, region-specific plates from South America are collectible because Tarija has a much smaller population compared to major Bolivian administrative hubs like La Paz. Significantly fewer vehicles were registered in Tarija. Finding an intact steel plate from the early 1940s in this condition is relatively uncommon in the license plate collecting community.

Have you heard about the 1973 Prince Edward Island “The Place To Be…in 1973 plates? Special plates were issued to ambulances and hearses on the 1973/75 PEI base plate, based on the Passenger Car plate format. According to the ALPCA archives because “the slogan "The Place To Be . . . In 1973" seemed inappropriate for such vehicles, the slogan was omitted from these plates.” Not all juristictions made ambulance and hearse plates. Only about 100 pairs of these Prince Edward Island hearse plates were issued making them highly desirable to collectors.

This 2015 Ohio restricted license plate – commonly called a yellow “party plate” with red lettering is important because courts and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles required drivers with OVI/DUI suspension or revocation to display them as a condition of limited driving privileges. It acted as a public warning and strict deterrent.

Public Warning: The bright yellow background and red characters made restricted vehicles instantly noticeable to law enforcement and the public.

Deterrence: Designed to create social pressure and discourage repeat offenses by exposing the driver’s suspension status on the road.

Did you know that a license plate once caused a panic among Massachusetts fishermen?
In 1928 the state designed a license plate with a small white cod fish to promote their fishing industry. What the designers did not notice was the fish was swimming away from “MASS”, the state’s abbreviated name. That exact year the state’s cod fishing harvest unexpectedly plummeted. With Massachusetts large Catholic population many residents blamed the Department of Motor Vehicles claiming that the plate was a bad omen and cursed the fishing industry. The cod was removed from passenger plates after 1928 but remained on commercial plates for 1929.
