Today, Jorge Ariel Angulo Tut is one of the best permit guides on the planet, but Jorge didn’t even see the ocean until he was 17 years old. He grew up on a small farm in rural Mexico. As a teenager, he took a job as a groundskeeper at a fishing lodge that was only accessible by boat. He’d never seen the ocean before, couldn’t swim, was terrified of the water, and hadn’t heard of fly fishing. Twenty-five years later, Jorge owns and operates Blacksmith Lodge, one of the most successful fly fishing operations in Mexico, where permit are plentiful and prime dates are coveted.

The Man & The Manifesto

Mark Raisler has been guiding the Missouri River near Craig, Montana for more than 25 years. He can tell you why March browns only come off on certain banks, identify which insect a fish is eating by the way it rises, and predict whether a trout is a brown or a rainbow simply by where it’s sitting.

A few years ago, Mark made a decision: no more nymphing. If you want to fish with Mark Raisler, you’re fishing dry flies.

He’s never been happier.

Head over the the Skwala YT for more on this pivotal decision. Prefer the longer read? In the Skwala Lounge, Mark explains why he made the switch, what it means for his clients, what it means for the river, and why he thinks more guides should draw` their own lines.

You’ve heard it a thousand times: presentation matters more than pattern. It’s true. But pattern still matters, and sometimes the right fly makes the difference between a great day and a beautiful float.

Charlie Craven has been spinning bugs for nearly 50 years—as an angler, a guide, a commercial tyer, and a fly designer. We asked him to help us think through one of fly fishing’s most persistent arguments: When do complicated flies make practical sense, and how much is too much in fly design?
