Melenie Duval, BA, ALC

Melenie has 25 years of experience in the field of lactation, parent education, and infant sleep support. In fact, many in the local childbirth community call her the "breast whisperer!" She brings passion, wisdom, and loving care to every family she serves. Melenie began her journey to serve families after the birth of her son in 1996. Breastfeeding came easy but she was not passed down the tradition from the women in her family. Seeking out breastfeeding support led her to Nursing Mothers Counsel of Oregon and a world of birth/breastfeeding mentors who embraced her and blessed her with their knowledge. Here she became a breastfeeding peer counselor, breastfeeding educator, neighborhood breast pump rental station, committee chair, grant writer, and event coordinator. After earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Rhetoric and Media Studies from Willamette University in 2009, Melenie continued to be drawn in by her passion for serving families. While working at the Gallatin City-County Health Department as the Lactation Education Program Coordinator, a program she developed from the ground up, she maintained her Certified Lactation Counselor accreditation. She received her Advanced Lactation Consultant certification in the fall of 2017. In 2018, nominated by her peers, Melenie was awarded the first MT Mother-Baby Breastfeeding Advocacy Award by the Montana Breastfeeding Coalition for her tireless efforts in community lactation support and advocacy. In 2021, she was elected to the Board of Directors for the Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana. Melenie became passionate about healthy sleep for families after hearing the stories of sleep deprivation over and over again from new parents. She dove into the world of infant and postpartum sleep and began working as a night nanny in 2017. As the owner of Goodnight Baby Montana, she has dedicated her career to helping families obtain healthy, happy sleep. She takes pride in helping parents successfully nurture their babies in a way that best supports that particular family’s goals and desires. She and her husband have two grown children, a beautiful granddaughter, and have loved and supported many more children in their home. Melenie speaks at national and international conferences on the topics of breastfeeding, community support systems, parenting, sleep deprivation in the postpartum period, and newborn care. What stood out to me wasn’t just how much sleep parents lose.

A 2022 survey found that parents lose the equivalent of 133 nights of sleep in their baby’s first year.

That’s a lot.

But the number that really stayed with me was this:

44% of parents said they didn’t have the support they needed or wanted when it came to their baby’s sleep.

That hit home.

Because after working with hundreds of families, I don’t think the biggest issue is a lack of information.

Parents are flooded with information.

There are sleep charts, schedules, methods, opinions, books, blogs, and advice coming from every direction. And most of it contradicts something else you’ve already been told.

So instead of feeling clearer, many parents end up feeling more confused.

And all of this is happening while they’re running on very little sleep, trying to care for a newborn, recover physically and emotionally, and adjust to a completely new way of life.

The same research found:
• 88% of parents said sleep was a source of stress
• 77% experienced anxiety before bedtime

That tells me something really important.

This has never just been about sleep.

It’s about support.

It’s about having someone in your corner when everything feels overwhelming. Someone to reassure you that what your baby is doing is normal. Someone to help you filter through the noise and make informed, confident decisions—without judgment or pressure.

At Goodnight Baby, that’s what we believe in.

Compassionate, evidence-informed support that protects the parent–baby relationship and meets families exactly where they are.

Because no two babies are the same, and no two families are either.

And honestly… this research is part of why we’ve been quietly building what’s next.

More education.
More resources.
More community.
More ways to support families—whether we’re caring for your baby overnight or helping you feel more confident and supported on your parenting journey.

We can’t wait to share more soon.

Because babies will wake.

And parents shouldn’t have to navigate it alone.

One thing I’ve learned after years of caring for babies…

Parents will often tell me, “I think my baby just isn’t a good sleeper.”

The truth is, I don’t really think there are “good sleepers” and “bad sleepers.”

There are babies with different temperaments. Different needs. Different personalities. Different ways of communicating. And every single one of them is learning.

I’ve cared for babies who struggled in the beginning and are now wonderful sleepers. I’ve cared for babies who slept beautifully for months and suddenly hit a rough patch.

That’s because sleep isn’t a personality trait. It isn’t luck. And it certainly isn’t a reflection of your parenting.

It’s something that develops.

As parents, we have the opportunity to gently guide that process in a way that respects our baby’s biology, supports healthy sleep habits, and strengthens the parent-child relationship along the way.

That’s what we’ve always believed at Goodnight Baby.

Not because we’re trying to create the “perfect sleeper.”

But because we know that when babies sleep well, families rest easier. And that kind of peace reaches far beyond bedtime.

Every baby is a good baby. Always.

I’ve spent years studying sleep.

Thousands of nights. Hundreds of families. More conversations about naps, bedtime, early mornings, and middle-of-the-night wake-ups than I could ever count.

So naturally, I came to the Oregon coast for a family vacation… and I’m still quietly noticing everyone’s sleep habits.

Occupational hazard. 😉

This week, four generations of my family are sharing one house.

My mom.
Me.
My husband.
My children.
My grandchildren.

Four generations.

As much as I love my work, this week has reminded me of something even bigger.

The memories my grandchildren will carry probably won’t be the perfectly planned outings or the photos we’ll frame. They’ll remember building sandcastles, chasing waves, laughing until bedtime, and feeling completely loved and safe.

And maybe that’s why sleep has always meant so much to me.

Not because perfect sleep is the goal—it isn’t.

Because rest gives us the chance to be present for the life happening around us.

It gives parents the energy to enjoy the little moments instead of simply surviving them.

It gives grandparents the stamina to keep saying “one more walk on the beach.”

It gives children the freedom to wake up ready for another adventure.

Watching four generations together has reminded me why I started this work in the first place.

I’ve never believed I was just helping babies sleep.

I’ve always believed I was helping create a little more peace inside a home.

Because years from now, I doubt anyone will remember the exact bedtime.

But they’ll remember how home felt.

This week, home just happens to be a beach house on the Oregon coast, filled with people I love.

And I couldn’t be more grateful. 🌊💙

Fireworks, family gatherings, and summer celebrations don't have to mean a sleepless night.

One of the questions we hear every Fourth of July is:

"Will the fireworks wake my baby?"

Sometimes they do. Sometimes they sleep right through them. The good news is there are a few simple things you can do to give your little one the best chance at a restful night.

Position your white noise machine between your baby's sleep space and the outside noise—not right next to your baby's head.

Layer sound if needed. A fan (used safely and not blowing directly on your baby) along with white noise can help soften sudden noises.

Keep the room dark and calm. Blackout curtains and a familiar sleep environment reduce other stimulation that can make waking more likely.

If you're attending fireworks or another loud event, use properly fitted infant hearing protection and keep your baby with you at all times.

Most importantly, keep your bedtime routine the same. Familiar routines help babies feel safe and settled, even when the world outside is a little louder than usual.

And if your baby wakes? That's okay.

Offer reassurance, respond the way you normally would, and remember that one noisy evening won't undo healthy sleep habits.

At Goodnight Baby, we believe great sleep isn't about perfection. It's about creating an environment where babies can rest safely while supporting the unique needs of the family in front of us.

Wishing you a safe, happy, and well-rested Fourth of July. ❤️🤍💙

There's a conversation in the baby sleep world that has never quite sat right with me.

On one side, parents are told they should expect perfect nights if they just follow the right method.

On the other, they're told, "Well... babies wake. That's just how it is."

I don't believe either tells the whole story.

After nearly three decades of caring for babies and supporting hundreds of families, here's what I've learned:

Babies are biologically designed to wake.

They're also biologically capable of learning.

Those two things can both be true.

The question isn't whether your baby can sleep.

The question is how we guide them there.

At Goodnight Baby, we don't believe you have to choose between respecting your baby's biology and getting more sleep.

We believe the most restorative, sustainable sleep happens when we work with biology instead of against it.

That doesn't mean waiting it out.

It doesn't mean forcing a method.

It means understanding your baby's development, temperament, feeding, environment, family values, and rhythms—and gently shaping sleep in a way that honors all of them.

We call that biologically respectful sleep shaping.

Because our goal has never been to "get babies sleeping."

Our goal is to help babies develop healthy, restorative sleep while helping parents feel confident, connected, and supported along the way.

Maybe that's why our conversations sound a little different.

You'll find fewer hacks here.

Fewer one-size-fits-all answers.

And a lot more curiosity, compassion, and thoughtful guidance.

Because every baby is a good baby.

And every family deserves a plan that's built around their baby—not someone else's.

9 Things New Parents Don't Have to Get Perfect 🤍

There is so much pressure to "do everything right" with a newborn.

The truth?

Your baby doesn't need perfection. They need parents who are learning, responding, and growing right alongside them.

Here are a few things we gently help families rethink:

🩷 You don't have to have a perfect schedule in the first few weeks.

Rhythm develops over time. Newborns are biologically designed to be flexible as they adjust to life outside the womb.

🩷 Not every cry means hunger.

Babies cry because they're communicating. Hunger is one reason—but it's only one of many.

🩷 More blankets don't always mean more comfort.

A comfortably dressed baby is a safer baby. Overheating is something we always want to avoid.

🩷 Newborns don't need a bath every day.

Their skin is delicate, and less is often more.

🩷 Self-soothing is a developmental skill—not an expectation for newborns.

Connection comes before independence.

🩷 Safe sleep matters every single time.

A firm, flat sleep surface with baby on their back remains the safest place for sleep.

🩷 It's okay to protect your postpartum space.

Visitors can wait. Your recovery and your baby's adjustment come first.

🩷 Comparison steals confidence.

Your baby's sleep doesn't need to look like someone else's. Every baby has their own temperament, development, and family.

🩷 Your recovery matters too.

A supported parent is one of the greatest gifts you can give your baby.

At Goodnight Baby, we believe parents deserve information—not intimidation.

We believe in biologically respectful sleep shaping that honors your baby's development, respects your family's values, and helps everyone move toward better sleep with connection, consistency, and confidence.

Because every baby is a good baby. And every family deserves to feel supported.

One of the greatest compliments we've ever received wasn't about sleeping through the night.

It was this:

"She has had an amazing relationship with rest and peaceful sleep since her very first week in this world."

That little one recently transitioned into her very first big girl bed after years of peaceful milestones—from contact naps to a bassinet, a crib, a floor bed, and now a big girl bed.

Not because she was forced into a schedule.

Not because she was a "perfect sleeper."

But because her family learned to understand her.

At Goodnight Baby, we believe sleep isn't something we do to babies.

It's something we nurture alongside families.

Every bedtime, every nap transition, every developmental leap is an opportunity to build trust, confidence, and a healthy relationship with rest.

Because our goal has never been perfect sleep.

Our goal has always been something much bigger:

A child who grows up believing that sleep is a safe, peaceful place to land. 🤍

One of the greatest privileges of our work is that families invite us into some of the most tender, vulnerable days of their lives.

They aren't just tired.

They're recovering.
They're learning.
They're healing.
They're becoming parents.

By the time we meet many families, they've already heard a dozen opinions.

Sleep train.
Don't sleep train.

Follow wake windows.
Ignore wake windows.

Feed on demand.
Stretch the feeds.

Rock the baby.
Don't rock the baby.

It's no wonder parents start questioning themselves.

Here's what we believe instead.

You don't need another opinion.

You need someone who will slow down long enough to understand your baby.

Someone who asks thoughtful questions before offering advice.

Someone who sees your family as more than a schedule or a sleep log.

Our job isn't to replace your instincts.

It's to strengthen them.

To help you understand what's happening.

To give you confidence in the decisions you make.

Because long after we're gone, we want you to look at your baby and think,

"I know what they need."

That's success to us.

We don't build dependence. We build confidence.

When families reach out to us, they often expect questions about naps, schedules, and bedtime routines.

And we'll get there.

But first?

We want to understand the whole picture.

How are you doing?

What's feeling hard?

What's working?

What have you already tried?

What kind of support would actually feel helpful right now?

Sleep is rarely just about sleep.

And families deserve care that reflects that.

Let's figure it out together.
