A tribute to the jaguar — a symbol of strength, protection in the spiritual world within Shipibo-Konibo cosmology. 🐆🌿

This hand-painted statement dress brings the jaguar to life through the visual language of kené, the ancestral geometric art of the Shipibo-Konibo people, whose designs reflect an interconnected universe of rivers, plants, animals, spirits and human life.

Embroidered artwork by Shipibo-Konibo kené artist Olinda Silvano, each line carries a story rooted in the Peruvian Amazon — ancestral knowledge reimagined through contemporary fashion.

El año pasado tuve el honor de participar como ponente en el conversatorio Moda y comunidades indígenas en el Perú: cultura, creación y derechos, organizado por el Foro Académico de la PUCP y MUSYAY , donde compartí panel con artista Olinda Silvano, abogada Ross Barrantes y politóloga Hatsumi Otsu.

A raíz del debate que hoy atraviesa la moda peruana, comparto algunos fragmentos de esta conversación. Los temas que discutimos hace un año siguen siendo fundamentales para pensar el presente y el futuro de nuestra industria.

Durante este conversatorio reflexionamos sobre preguntas fundamentales en la moda:

💬 Cómo crear sin caer en prácticas extractivas?
💬 Cómo colaborar con artesanos sin reproducir desigualdades y respetar patrimonio cultural?

Espero que estas reflexiones aporten a una conversación más informada sobre la importancia de la autoría, el reconocimiento, el consentimiento previo y las colaboraciones éticas con los artesanos y artistas de nuestros pueblos originarios.

Within these designs are references to figures such as the Onanya (healer) and the Ronin (anaconda), symbols of wisdom, protection, and the profound connection between people and the natural world.
