Small biz wonderings...
Usually I'm opening up my Etsy shop this time of year. But I got off that platform (FREE 🍉🇵🇸🍉) and haven't found a good replacement.

I'm in an even more vulnerable financial situation than in previous years. I'm behind about $10k in rent, and I don't know how to even begin to get myself out of this hole. I've picked up some seasonal work so I can't do holiday markets on weekends. It's been a struggle every day, and honestly I'm exhausted.

If you have suggestions on a low lift platform for my silly little crochet creations, please drop them below.

STRING SPORTS!

My husband walked in yesterday holding a small gift bag with the proudest smile on his face. "Happy birthday, babe. I got you something for your hobby."
I opened it up and there it was. A crochet hook. A perfectly normal, ergonomic crochet hook in this gorgeous deep purple color.
"It's a sport hook," he announced confidently. "So you can do your string sports."
I just stared at him. String sports. STRING SPORTS.
He continued, completely oblivious to my internal meltdown. "You know, like when you're doing that thing with the yarn and making the blankets. That's basically a sport, right? You're always saying your hands hurt after."
I couldn't even be mad. The man tried. He genuinely thought he nailed it. And honestly? In his defense, when I'm deep into a project for my Tedooo app orders, hunched over my work at 2 AM trying to finish a custom baby blanket, muttering about tension and stitch counts, I probably DO look like I'm training for the Olympics.
"String sports," I repeated, testing the words out loud.
"Yeah!" He was so excited. "And I made sure to get the fancy one with the grip thing. The lady at the store said it's ergonomic."
The lady at the store. Bless her heart, she probably tried so hard to explain what crochet was, and this is what stuck in his brain.
I posted a photo in one of my Tedooo groups and the response was immediate. People were DYING. "String sports" is apparently going to be what we call it from now on. Someone already made a mock-up design for t-shirts that says "Extreme String Sports Champion."
My husband walked by while I was reading the comments, saw everyone's reactions, and got this confused look on his face. "Wait, is it not called that?"
Twenty-three years of marriage, and the man still finds ways to surprise me. I'm keeping him. And I'm absolutely using this "sport hook" for my next string sports session tonight. Got three orders to finish, and apparently, I'm an athlete now.

The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar!
Made broke bestie their first Halloween costume based on one of my favorite kids books!
Hat is freehand crochet, swaddling cocoon is 250 rows on the Sentro knitting machine.
Bb nugget is very into the cocoon, not enthusiastic about the hat 🤷🏾‍♀️
I'll have baby cocoons available on Etsy when I update the shop on November 17! They are great for newborns and people who aren't super confident in their swaddling skills yet.

I have a conundrum.
I am doing fall and winter market prep, and I'm using my knitting machine to make hats and scarves. Something that I know is popular in a lot of markets are hats and scarves in house colors. Now, JK Rowling is a raging transphobe and I'm not interested in supporting her work. However I am a black q***r femme who would like to make money. So do I make hats and scarves and house colors, and potentially signal to other q***r and trans folks that I agree with the politics of the creator of Hogwarts, or do I potentially lose money by standing in my values?
