October Whirlwind

Hi Friend,

Whew, October has been a doozy!

I last sent a newsletter on September 24th, exactly one month ago. I mentioned I was nervous I was going to miss out on the fall foliage, but I'm happy to report I have been taking meaningful pauses in my busy schedule to admire the colors of the season.

So here we are now, on October 24th. Since I last checked in, we've been up to New York for the Country Living Fair -- back home to "rest" for a week -- then down to Virginia for the Lucketts Fall Market.

When I got back from Lucketts, I took exactly 20 minutes to "rest" again before hauling boxes back to the shop and dragging up holiday decor from the basement.

We now find ourselves in that liminal space between "Market Season" and "Holiday Season"

Our home in Downtown Frederick is going to be featured on a Candelight Holiday House Tour December 5th and 6th (https://www.celebratefrederick.com/events/holidays/candlelight-house-tour/) (tickets go on sale November 7th) and I want to be ready EARLY, so that I can enjoy the cozy, festive season. So, I've started decorating my home waaaaaay earlier than I normally would -- I'm trying to work smarter not harder... I'm not so sure it's working out!

Speaking of FESTIVE, we've had to make some changes to our annual holiday wreath class. Due to issues stemming from tree sap, we can no longer use the yoga studio space we have been using the past two years.

This year's Holiday Wreath Workshop (https://www.whisperingflowerfarm.com/flower-shop/holiday-wreath-making-workshop) will be held on Sunday, November 29th from 12-3pm, in the greenhouse at Whispering Flower Farm in Rohresville, MD. The spots are VERY LIMITED, so if this class is of interest, best to snag a seat ASAP. Link is below (click the wreath photo).

Art galleries in town also open late. Bring the kids and join the Brunswick "Boo Trail", stop by the haunted house at the Horine Building and do some trunk-or-treating in Martins Creek parking lot.

Happy Fall Y'all

Hi Friend,

I'm in the last bits of preparation for the Country Living Fair (https://countrylivingfairs.com/) next weekend (Oct 2-3-4). I'm almost finished with pricing, cleaning, tagging, and boxing up everything in my garage.

I'm still hunting for, and cutting, any and all foliage that can/will look good dried that I can utilize for display at the show. No bush or tree is off limits, and I keep snippers in my car!

Right now, I'm obsessively watching the weather in New York and counting my lucky stars that this impending Nor'easter is hitting this weekend and not next weekend!

However, that means, when we show up to the fairgrounds on Tuesday to get set up, we'll be dealing with three days of leftover rain, mud and muck.

That's okay!

I'd rather that than actively dealing with wind and rain during showtime. I've lost plenty of pieces to poor weather when doing outdoor shows in the past. It's a bummer when that happens, but it's just "part of the job."

If you're sticking around Maryland next weekend, come by Brunswick for the annual Railroad Days Festival (https://www.brunswickrailroaddays.org/) (Oct 3rd & 4th). Lots of vendors, music, good food and of course shopping at Potomac River Interiors!

FLOWER WORKSHOP CANCELED:

When Yeon dropped off this week's Flower CSA (last of the season) we got to chatting about our upcoming Fall Floral Workshop that was scheduled for October 11th and decided it was best to CANCEL the class. We both have a lot on our plates right now and realized this was something we didn't need to pursue.

Sorry for any inconvenience. We will have some grab-and-go bouquets next weekend during Railroad Days, so come by to grab the last of the seasons dahlias!

What it Takes

Hi Friend,

Fall is SO CLOSE and I'm super excited, although, I'm quite worried I may not actually get to enjoy ANY of it...

I am T-12 days until I pack up my U-Haul and drive up to Rhinebeck, NY to set up for the Country Living Fair (https://countrylivingfairs.com/) (Oct 2-4). I am still knee deep in show preparations.

Here's a little snippet of what it takes to pull off a show this big (they're expeciting 30,000 visitors!)...

I've been collecting (vintage) inventory for about 9 months. My garage is FULL. Most of those pieces needed some level of repair and cleaning. Everything needs tagging, photographed, and entered into our point of sale system. Then it all needs to be carefully packed into a 24' U-Haul.

We have 2.5 days to set up, basically, an entire 500 sqft. retail store... and it must look AMAZING. This is NOT just throwing up some 6' folding tables and putting product on top. And since this event is for Country Living Magazine, there's an added pressure for the space to look over-the-top because there will be significant press opportunities.

All this on top of the logistics of keeping my shop in Brunswick stocked and open while the town has its annual Railroad Days event (Oct. 3-4) where thousands of people come to town.

My husband is coming with me to New York to be my unpaid-furniture-hauling-intern, while my mom comes to stay with my son and dogs for the week.

There are a lot of moving parts. And I've never done this show before, so there's the added stress of not knowing if this show will even be "worth" it (financially, energetically, etc.).

It's a big risk.

But you know what "they" say... no risk, no reward!

I'll have time to peep the changing leaves while I drive home after the show!

Hot on the heels of Country Living Fair is the Lucketts Fall Market (https://www.luckettsmarkets.com/) in Berryville, VA (Oct 16-18). Gosh, I'm tired just typing that sentence.

Finally, we'll be setting the store up for the holidays the last week in October, right before Halloween.

I almost forgot, we also have our last fresh floral workshop (https://www.potomacriverinteriors.com/product/fall-floral-bounty-class-oct-11th-2pm/2369?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=EWHFNMBW422EPXFPVKWHZIO2) of the year inbetween the two shows. Fall is here?

Hi Friend,

Time flies! We've reached the unofficial "end of summer" -- Labor Day Weekend. As a life-long retail worker, I always knew when Labor Day was, because all the deparment stores would advertise their end-of-summer sales. The date is forever seared into my brain.

My husband, to this day, can not remember when Labor Day is -- every year I have to remind him, "it's always the 1st Monday in September". Same thing happens with Memorial Day.

Since we had our end-of-summer sidewalk clearance sale last weekend, there's not much going on this weekend. There's still some pieces available -- they've just been absorbed into the store shelves.

I held the sale last weekend becuase I knew my Mom would be working the shop this weekend and I didn't want to leave her with too much to oversee. I'm taking Ruby (my shop manager) to the Kacey Musgraves concert in Baltimore, so thats why Mom is working the shop this weekend -- "Thanks Mom!"

We'll be open special holiday hours on Monday (10-3pm) in addition to our regular shop hours. I will be there (hi this is Lisa) so come visit me on Monday!

This is also the last weekend to participate in our Summer Reading Giveaway. Any book purchase gets you an entry into our $100 giftcard drawing. We'll pull a winner on Labor Day!
