Unlike traditional rummage sales or cluttered thrift stores/flea markets with unorganized shelves and piles, true “vintage” markets — such as the widely popular Cotton Shed Vintage Market — are heavily curated, with vendors frequently arranging their booths into vignettes or little visual storybooks to give customers ideas of how to display items in their own homes.

While working my booths this week, a customer came by and commented about the items I was adding, and told me that she loves shopping The Cotton Shed! She volunteered that she drives from northeast Arkansas at least once a month just to browse for ideas and maybe pick up a treasure or two to recreate the look.

As it happens, another customer stopped by that same day and asked whether I had a vintage nut grinder with the glass bottom and plastic top. She was very specific, and I immediately knew what she was looking for, because I often use and cherish the one that once belonged to my grandmother.

I told her that, while I didn’t have one in my booth, if she would inquire at the front desk, they could easily do an inventory search and another vendor may have one. She thanked me and went on her way.

I was still working in my booth some time later when she walked back by and exclaimed, “I found one!” She proudly held up a vintage grinder with a white top. (Mine has a yellow top, and it was in that instant that I knew that I was going to need to also find one with a white top. 🤣)

I asked her if the front desk staff had been helpful in locating it through the inventory search and she said, “no, I actually didn’t even ask. I found it by myself. It’s the thrill of the hunt!”

It’s. The. Thrill. Of. The. Hunt.

Most vestiges of July 4th removed (but there’s still plenty of vintage Americana)! 🇺🇸

Added a “General Store” section with old crocks, vintage yardsticks, burlap coffee sacks, dishes, old repro ads, original seed packets, advertising tins … all the stuff!!!

And lots of other vintage inventory, including really nice men’s size 8-1/2 name-brand cowboy boots.

And that rare and lovely 1950’s Hedco New York swirled milk glass lamp.
