Back to the Basics, Part 5: SPF.

Okay, we made it to the one I knew we couldn’t skip.

SPF.

I know sunscreen isn’t always the most exciting part of your skincare routine, but if you’re spending money on serums and treatments for pigmentation, acne marks, fine lines, or overall skin health, you really don’t want to skip this step.

And yes, I mean every morning.

SPF helps protect your skin from UV damage that can contribute to premature aging, pigmentation, and other changes we’re trying to prevent in the first place.

One thing I really want to emphasize is that your SPF doesn’t have to feel heavy, greasy, or make you want to wash your face five minutes after putting it on.

There are so many good options now for different skin types and preferences. Dry skin, oily skin, acne-prone skin, sensitive skin. You just have to find one you actually enjoy wearing.

Because the best SPF is the one you’re going to use consistently.

And don’t forget your neck, chest, ears, and any other exposed areas that get just as much sun as your face.

If you haven’t found an SPF you love yet, comment below or send me a DM. I’m happy to help you find one that makes sense for your skin.

And tell me, what’s your SPF holy grail? I want to know what you’re actually using and loving.

That wraps up our Back to the Basics series.

Cleanser. One targeted treatment. Moisturizer. SPF.

It really doesn’t have to be complicated.

Your skin doesn’t need a bathroom full of products. It needs the right products, consistency, and a little patience.

Back to the Basics, Part 4: Your moisturizer.

Let’s clear up one of the biggest skincare myths I hear:

ā€œMy skin is oily, so I don’t need moisturizer.ā€

Actually, your skin still needs hydration. Even if you produce plenty of oil.

Moisturizer helps support your skin barrier, reduce water loss, and keep your skin feeling comfortable and balanced.

And if you’re using acne treatments, exfoliants, retinoids, or other active ingredients, moisturizer becomes even more important.

I also don’t want you choosing a moisturizer based solely on whether the bottle says ā€œfor oily skinā€ or ā€œfor dry skin.ā€

Your skin can be oily, dehydrated, sensitive, acne-prone, or some combination of all of those things. What works for you should depend on what your skin actually needs.

And no, a good moisturizer shouldn’t leave you feeling like you’ve got a layer of grease sitting on your face.

The goal is comfortable, supported skin.

If you’re constantly skipping moisturizer because you’re afraid it’ll make you break out, it might be time to rethink what you’re using.

Not sure what type of moisturizer would work best for your skin? Comment below or send me a DM. I’m happy to help you figure it out.

And tell me, what moisturizer is your holy grail? I want to know what you guys are loving!

Next up in Back to the Basics: SPF, and yes, we’re going there.

Back to the Basics, Part 3: Your serum.

This is probably the step where I see people get the most carried away.

You find a serum for acne, then one for pores, one for hydration, one for pigmentation, one for fine lines… and suddenly your bathroom counter looks like a skincare aisle.

The problem isn’t that those ingredients are bad. The problem is that more isn’t always better.

When you’re building a routine, I would much rather see you choose ONE targeted serum that makes sense for your skin and your biggest concern right now.

Maybe that’s an acne treatment.

Maybe it’s something for pigmentation.

Maybe your skin is irritated and needs more barrier support.

You don’t have to tackle every concern at the same time.

And if you’re already using something like a retinoid or another active treatment, that counts too. You don’t need to keep adding more just because your routine looks ā€œtoo simple.ā€

Give your skin some consistency and give your products time to actually do their job.

Pick the problem you want to work on first. Then choose the product to match it.

Not sure what serum would actually be right for your skin? Comment below or send me a DM. I’m happy to help you figure out where to start.

And I want to know yours too. What’s your skincare holy grail? Tell me in the comments. I might even find a new favorite!

Next up in Back to the Basics: moisturizer, because yes, even oily and acne-prone skin needs one.

Back to the Basics, Part 2: Let’s talk cleanser.

I think cleanser is one of those products we don’t think too much about. We just want our face to feel clean.

But there’s a difference between clean and stripped.

If your skin feels tight, dry, or squeaky after you wash it, that isn’t necessarily a sign that your cleanser is doing a great job. It could actually be doing too much.

Your cleanser should remove things like dirt, oil, makeup and SPF without leaving your skin feeling uncomfortable afterward.

And if you have oily or acne-prone skin, you don’t automatically need the strongest cleanser you can find. You can have oily skin and still have a skin barrier that needs some love.

This is especially important if you’re also using exfoliants, acne treatments, retinoids, or other active ingredients. Your cleanser doesn’t need to be another treatment step.

Sometimes simple really is better.

So tonight, pay attention to how your skin feels after you wash it.

Does it feel clean and comfortable?

Or does it feel tight and squeaky?

That little detail can tell you a lot about whether your cleanser is actually working for your skin.

Next up in Back to the Basics: your ONE targeted serum.

What cleanser are you currently using? I’d love to hear what everyone is loving.

Okay, enough about skincare for a minute. Let’s get to know each other.

Hi, I’m Jessica, the esthetician and owner of Wild Grace Skin Co. I’m a local mom, a wife, and apparently someone who thought I needed another job, because I also spend my mornings at Roasted Rooster Coffee Company. ā˜•šŸ˜‚

I’ve always been drawn to the beauty world, but I knew I wanted to build something that was my own. Something I could grow, pour my time and energy into, and hopefully create something meaningful enough that I could share with my girls someday if they decide they want to be a part of it.

When I started dreaming about Wild Grace, I knew I wanted it to be more than just a place to get a facial.

I wanted a little space where women could come in and just exhale.

Maybe we talk the entire time and catch up like old friends. Maybe you’ve had a long week and want an hour where nobody needs anything from you. Maybe you just want to lay there, relax, and enjoy some quiet.

Whatever you need that day, there’s no judgment and no pressure.

And you definitely don’t need perfect skin before you come see me. In fact, I’m probably going to tell you that you don’t need half the products you’ve been buying anyway. šŸ˜‚

A few things about me outside of Wild Grace:

ā˜• I love coffee. Obviously.

šŸ‚ Fall is my absolute favorite season.

šŸ¤ My family is my favorite place to be.

āœļø My faith is also a really important part of who I am. It influences the way I try to treat people and the kind of environment I want to create, even though it isn’t the main focus of my business, it is a big influence. I want Wild Grace to be a place where women feel welcomed, cared for, and comfortable being exactly who they are.

I’m still building this little dream of mine, and I’m so excited to see where it takes me. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has followed along, booked with me, shared my posts, or simply cheered me on.

And now I want to know you.

Tell me one random thing about yourself in the comments. Your coffee order, your favorite season, how many kids or pets you have, your current obsession, whatever comes to mind.

I’d love to get to know the people behind the names I see here. šŸ¤

Your 8 step skincare routine might actually be why your skin is mad at you.

I feel like social media has convinced us that we need an entire bathroom shelf of products to have good skin.

Cleanser, toner, essence, 3 serums, exfoliant, moisturizer, eye cream… and somehow we’re still breaking out.

Sometimes, doing less is exactly what your skin needs.

Welcome to Part 1 of my new series, Back to the Basics, where we’re going to take a step back from all the skincare noise and focus on what your skin actually needs.

Your skin doesn’t need a complicated routine. It needs consistency.

If we were starting your routine from scratch, these are the four things I would focus on first:

1. A gentle cleanser

Something that cleans your skin without stripping it or leaving you feeling tight and dry afterward.

2. ONE targeted serum

Choose one active that actually makes sense for your skin and your goals. Acne, pigmentation, hydration, barrier support. You don’t need five different serums trying to do everything at once.

3. A good moisturizer

Your skin barrier needs support too. Keeping your skin hydrated and comfortable is just as important as treating your concerns.

4. SPF every morning

This one really is non negotiable. Even on the days you’re just running errands or staying mostly inside.

Before you buy another skincare product because you saw it on TikTok, take a look at what’s already sitting on your bathroom counter.

Do you know what everything is doing? Are you using multiple products that are basically doing the same thing? Are you constantly adding something new because you aren’t seeing results fast enough?

You might not need more products. You might just need a routine that makes sense for your skin and that you can actually stick with.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down each of these four basics so you can feel a little more confident about what you’re putting on your skin.

Tell me what you’re currently using below, or send me a picture of your skincare shelf. I’d love to help you simplify it.

Follow along for Part 2.
