Don’t miss the panel Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior in Action Across Clinical Settings with Emily Kerwin, Marietta Hemming, Margaret Hagerty, Troy Fry, and Toni Rose Agana.

Direct contact with Skinner’s primary texts is increasingly rare in graduate training, yet his functional framework for language still shapes effective clinical practice. In this panel, experienced practitioners reflect on how his writings, and the research that grew from them, have informed their work in consultation, assessment, and program development. They’ll discuss what a Skinnerian analysis looks like in practice (and what it doesn’t), share personal accounts of meaningful outcomes for learners with verbal deficits, and tackle the challenges of teaching this analysis to practitioners, caregivers, and providers who approach language differently. The panel closes with advice for early-career behavior analysts on staying engaged with Skinner’s work.

You’ll leave able to:

What happens when Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior meets spoken word poetry? This session shows how the principles behind Verbal Behavior can be used to promote lasting, sustainable behavior change. Drawing on ACT frameworks and language development research, it moves from audience awareness to behavioral fluency, with attention to cultural and contextual variables in delivery and to ethical, compassionate communication.

You’ll leave able to:

✏️ Apply at least three evidence-based strategies for establishing and maintaining instructional control with live and recorded audiences
✏️ Analyze audience variables and design fluency-based verbal interventions that shape listener repertoires

The Fall 2026 Skinner Session features Revelations from the Skinner Tapes with David Palmer and David Roth.

Newly discovered audiotapes of Skinner’s 1967 seminar on verbal behavior show a side of him many haven’t heard. In them, he speaks more explicitly than anywhere else about topography and the operant, clarifies several verbal operant classes, and gives his fullest response to Chomsky and other critics of Verbal Behavior. He also comes across as patient, egalitarian, and even funny in the classroom.

You’ll leave able to:

Explain what Skinner thought about topography in defining the operant
