Horses are stoic🐴💪 by nature and don’t always exhibit outward signs of internal stress because that would make them more vulnerable to prey - for example, appearing as a weak individual in the herd.

Stress🥺 INCREASES⬆ gastric acid🧪production and is often induced when a horse's natural instincts are suppressed such as: lack of forage; confinement/isolation; lack of movement; lack of direct physical interaction with other herd members; pain; lack of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals necessary for proper thyroid, hormone and neurological function; transport; and rigorous training🐎.

While it’s unavoidable to suppress some of the horse’s natural instincts in domestication, you can provide an environment and feeding practices that mimic them as much as possible.

Gastric (stomach) ulcers are commonly caused by lack of forage & stress. Learn how to protect your horse with these 7 actionable solutions 👉 https://www.thehaypillow.com/blogs/news/causes-of-equine-ulcers-7-stress-factors-solutions

As part of our new series feeding horses ScoopRX the first time, it is time to meet the horses that have started this program.

Meet Mango.
If you watch her go, you would say wow.

She is quick. She is athletic and expressive in that way certain mares just are. When she is on, she is brilliant.

What you do not see is the management behind it.

The planning.
The spacing of her rides.
The decision to never work her hard three days in a row.

The quiet conversations before we go into the ring.

Before we show, I tell her I just need sixty five seconds from you. Then it is hand walks and treats for the rest of the day.

Less is more with her.

Because Mango is hormonal. She can get sore “randomly.” She can get buddy sour. Some days she needs to be led into the ring. On paper she looks powerful and talented. Behind the scenes, there has been a lot of careful support to help her stay that way.

She has had physical things we have treated. A uterine infection. Painful cycles. Real discomfort. And with mares, it is rarely just physical or just mental. Those systems are connected.

When the body is uncomfortable, the mind braces.

When the mind is stressed, the body tightens.

You cannot treat one without paying attention to the other.

The last six months, something has shifted. She has turned over a new leaf. The last two days she did not need to be led into the ring. She feels happier in her body. More settled in her mind.

I cannot tell you what came first, the physical discomfort or the mental tension. I just know that when we started supporting both, everything started to level out.
This is what balancing a mare looks like.

Not shutting her down.
Not dulling her brilliance.

Just helping her body feel steady enough that her talent does not cost her.
And if you have ever ridden into the ring thinking, she is amazing… I just hope she holds it together today… you are not alone.
