“My suit looked bad after one year; is this normal?”
I can feel the frustration/disappointment.

Unfortunately, it is.

But it is NOT cool when you’ve dropped a few hundred dollars.

When someone says their suit didn’t stand the test of time, it’s usually for one of these four reasons. (Number 3 always surprises guys.)

1. Storing suits in plastic dry‑cleaner bags.

There’s a reason: plastic bags are NOT toys. They break down, yellow, and absolutely transfer chemicals to the cloth. No bueno.
Instead, use a breathable cloth garment bag so the suit can “breathe,” stay fresh, and avoid damage.

2. Abusing their jackets

i.e., draping it over chair backs and car seats.

This really destroys the suit’s integrity. Be a big boy, keep it on the hanger, and hang it on the hook in the back seat. In the garment bag is even better.

3. Taking your suit to the dry cleaners too often.

This is one people get wrong, a lot! Between high heat and chemicals, regular dry cleaning will shorten your suit’s lifespan. That’s the tradeoff for over-cleaning.

Only take it to the cleaners when it’s truly soiled or just for a press. Otherwise, spot clean as needed.

4. Selecting cheaper fabrics, especially if you know you will travel, commute, or wear your suits hard. Instead, invest in durable, travel-friendly fabrics rather than fragile “showpiece cloths,” and you’ll find your suit lasts for years to come.

Love your suit, and I promise it will love you back.

Last week, a client came in for his first fitting. He stood completely rigid in front of the glass, jaw square, staring at his shoulders.

I told him to drop his arms, relax his shoulders, and take a breath. We’re not designing a straightjacket, my man.

Once he stood comfortably, we saw the real fit!

His right shoulder sits half an inch lower than his left. Not uncommon, especially if you regularly carry a heavy laptop bag.

Some guys think they shouldn’t be able to move.
Others expect clean, unbroken lines, even if they dramatically reach for the ceiling or do a cartwheel.

That’s not how tailoring works. Remember, a suit is a handmade garment, and it’s supposed to move with you.

Here is the hierarchy of a proper fit:

Shoulders first!
If the shoulders are wrong, nothing else will look right. I look at your posture, shoulder height on each side, and how the jacket hangs in front and back. When we get this right, we’re most of the way there.

Button stance & balance.
The button position has to work with your body, especially with your stomach and chest. When you’re standing naturally, the front should lie clean, without pulling or collapsing.

Trousers that taper, not strangle.
A modern trouser should be well-tapered, not baggy, yet still comfortable. It should break cleanly over the shoe rather than puddle at the ankle.
True tailoring is about accommodating those unique quirks of your posture.
My job is to listen and then refine until you look in the mirror and say, “Yes! That’s it.” and…you feel comfortable to move as necessary.

If you have never felt what a truly dialed‑in fit is like, send me a message, and let’s talk about what’s working… and what isn’t…in your current wardrobe.

I know that your last custom suit is sitting in the back of your closet.

You don’t wear it anymore.

Probably because its uncomfortable.
Probably because it wasn’t really custom.

So many custom suit makers measure your chest and sleeve, send it to a factory, and hope you won’t notice.

One brand told me their redo rate is 15%! That’s roughly 1 in 7 suits are made so wrong they can’t even be altered to fit.

If you went for a less expensive option, it’s very likely you got a suit with glued construction but a pretty fabric.

Real custom starts with three things:

- A pattern drafted around your body, not a generic template.
- Fabrics chosen for how they breathe, drape, move, and last.
- A fitter who listens to how you like to wear your clothes, instead of forcing you into trends or his idea of style.

Once you’ve had that experience, there is no going back.

Black suits are the James Bond of formalwear; navy/navy suits are the Swiss Army knife of your wardrobe.

Black suits certainly have their place - funerals, galas, Jewish weddings, or when you're planning a heist and need to blend into the shadows.

But navy is more versatile, looks better in photos, and matches most skin tones better. It also pairs beautifully with almost any shirt-and-tie combination and works with both dark brown and black leather shoes. I'm not saying to ditch black. (I'd go out of business.) But if you're flexible? Go navy/blue.
