A customer came to me today for help. She hired a local sewist to make a . In a nutshell she was not pleased with the outcome and was refunded by the sewist after MONTHS of being igrnored and a YEAR to get the quilt back. Our customer sews and is hoping to remake it herself but needed guidance. To my shock, none of the pieces were straight cut, fully interfaced, incorrect batting and had a quilted design that the client didn't pre-approve. The shirts were interfaced with, i assume, was , Heat and bond becuase of the plastic texture and it was water resistant.
Why is this a problem? You have a sandwich of plastic, batting, plastic. You wash it. It will never truly dry and will eventually promote mold. Additionally the quilt will have a plastic feel, be dense, not breathable and make crinkling sound that will never go away.
It was hard not taking on this endevor to fix it personally but my costs (materials and more labor than normal) wasn't near her comfortable budget. So next best thing I could do, was give her options and directions on how to correct it (new interfacing, new batting, trimming down the shirts and assembly.) Along with different quilting options but that for longevity of the quilt, its REQUIRED.
