In Zimbabwe, a unique group of rangers known as the Akashinga Rangers meaning "the brave ones" in the Shona language is changing the face of wildlife conservation. Made up of rural women, including single mothers and survivors of domestic violence, the unit patrols nature reserves and protects some of Africa's most threatened wildlife.

Founded in 2017 by the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, the program was created to combat heavily armed poachers. Today, the rangers safeguard vast areas that are home to endangered elephants and rhinos. Their work has helped reduce elephant poaching by more than 80% in the areas they protect.

The impact goes beyond conservation. The program provides employment, strengthens local communities, and creates opportunities for women who might otherwise have limited access to stable income. The initiative plans to employ more than 1,000 women as Akashinga Rangers and support a workforce of over 3,000 people across Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Akashinga demonstrates what can happen when local women lead conservation efforts in the communities they know best. The model is proving that protecting wildlife and improving livelihoods can go hand in hand.
