What does it take to recreate one of America’s most recognizable hats?

Approximately 30 hours of traditional millinery.

When our client Pete came to us with the idea of recreating Uncle Sam’s iconic top hat, we knew it would be one of the more unique projects to come through our studio. And we live for that.

Created ahead of the Fourth of July and America 250, this historically inspired replica was handcrafted from grizzly felt using traditional millinery techniques. Every curve, stitch, and finish was completed by hand, just as every one of our Signature hats is.

Projects like these are why we love what we do. While Southern Ruetz is known for our custom hats, luxury handmade hats, and immersive Hat Bar experiences, opportunities to create pieces outside our everyday work allow us to celebrate the history and craftsmanship of traditional millinery.

A huge thank you to Pete for trusting us with the vision and allowing us to bring this piece to life.

Festival season is here and honestly, there is no better place for a Southern Ruetz hat to live.

Long days, loud music, dirt on your boots, drink in your hand, and a hat that somehow looks even better by the end of the night. That’s the kind of life these pieces are made for. Not sitting on a shelf. Out in the wild collecting experiences.

The right hat becomes a part of you and your adventures. The photos. The memories. The strangers stopping you to ask where you got it. Festival season is about standing out a little, having too much fun, and being exactly who you are without toning it down. Sounds pretty Southern Ruetz to us.

Thanks for letting us join the party for a couple days. 🤠

Good music, good people, and exactly the kind of energy we love being around. It was also great finally getting to meet after making him a hat a few years back. Watching our hats continue to travel, collect stories, and find their way back into moments like this never gets old.

We’re so glad we got to hang for a bit after the show and already excited to cook up a new full custom piece in the coming weeks!

A fully custom Southern Ruetz Signature ready for the kickoff of today.

Hand dyed with wine and built to turn heads, this piece is layered with floral details, rich leather accents, stingray, crushed oyster shells by , and a provided shark’s tooth to bring a little salty air from home into wine country. Finished with a Gucci ribbon brim binding, paint splatter details, a wine dyed skull, and our signature hurricane crown.

And of course, every fully handmade Signature is completed with our skeleton key. A mark of the hours, artistry, and craftsmanship that goes into creating a hat this bold, personal, and impossible to ignore.
