Ibu We are a global movement providing the means and the marketplace for women to rise, through the art of their hands, into financial self-sufficiency.

When you shop or donate to Ibu, you support women in real and life-changing ways. Three objectives form the foundation of Ibu: To provide sumptuous, luxury garments to the western woman which carry a story, a sense of purpose and meaning, and a strong, bold aesthetic; to reinvigorate the practice of hand-made cloth in cultures where it is disappearing; to support women’s financial independence in

developing countries. The online retail store, offers wraps, jackets, skirts, shawls, ruanas, and more, which convey a dynamic strength and beauty worthy of an ibu. We work with woman artisans in 50 countries, including Madagascar, Laos, India, Mexico, Guatemala, Bangladesh, Nagaland, Zimbabwe, Peru, and the United States. Completely hand-loomed, spun, dyed, or stitched, each piece is inspired by the traditional textile traditions which the artisans carry forward and which founder Susan Hull Walker adjusts in scale, palette, and design for the Western market.

Ibu Founder Susan Hull Walker feature with The Story Exchange

"Follow your passion and know your goals. I want women to have the means, the respect and the recognition not only to support themselves and their families, but to rise into leadership in their communities. We need their voices, their know-how, their ambition and resilience in the world – now more than ever."

“Ibu celebrates creative makers, creative thinkers, creative problem solvers, and creative ways to show love, kindness, and support,” reflected Becky, a veteran Fringe Road traveler. Her words beautifully captured the essence of our journey. Twenty women from across the country came together to experience IFAM, where 148 artisan groups from 53 countries filled the plaza with extraordinary handmade work. We searched for treasures from India, Peru, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Thailand, China, and beyond. We reconnected with longtime Ibu artisan partners, discovered remarkable new makers, and left inspired by the artistry, innovation, and resilience woven into every piece—and every conversation.

Perhaps the greatest gift of the week was the community that formed among our travelers. We learned one another’s stories, found common purpose, and encouraged each other to dream bigger.

What a beautiful weekend of allyship with our group in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This trip has been part reunion, part treasure hunt — old adobe doorways, new friendships, and more gorgeous handwoven pieces than we know what to do with. The artistry, beauty, and inspiration never ceased.

From wandering the stalls of the International Folk Art Market to catching up with the artisans and designers who make Ibu what it is. Thank you to all of our hosts who have welcomed Ibu and its allies into their spaces and community.

Scroll through a few of our favorite moments—and follow along on for what’s to come.

One of the highlights of our trip was experiencing the International Folk Art Market hosted in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Seeing the beautiful work of artisans from all over the globe reminds us why we do this work. Every textile has a story, every maker has a name, and every purchase sends support straight back to the women who created it.
