The online retail store, offers wraps, jackets, skirts, shawls, ruanas, and more, which convey a dynamic strength and beauty worthy of an ibu.

Ibu—a global movement celebrating women artisans, preserving their heritage craft traditions, and building their path to economic sovereignty—elevating the power women already hold in their hands. Three objectives form the foundation of Ibu: To provide sumptuous, luxury garments to the western woman which carry a story, a sense of purpose and meaning, and a strong, bold aesthetic; to reinvigorate the practice of hand-made cloth in cultures where it is disappearing; to support women’s financial independence in developing countries. We work with woman artisans in 50 countries, including Madagascar, Laos, India, Mexico, Guatemala, Bangladesh, Nagaland, Zimbabwe, Peru, and the United States. Completely hand-loomed, spun, dyed, or stitched, each piece is inspired by the traditional textile traditions which the artisans carry forward and which founder Susan Hull Walker adjusts in scale, palette, and design for the Western market.

Last week, Ibu was delighted to welcome 2023 Global Champion Wafae Safar to Charleston!

Through her work with Cherry Buttons Cooperative, Ibu’s longtime partner in Sefrou, Morocco, Wafae and her mother-in-law, Amina, have helped more than 200 women turn the traditional art of soutache into sustainable livelihoods.

During her visit, Wafae shared her craft and story with students at Ashley Hall and Porter-Gaud, teaching them how to make their own cherry buttons.

The celebration continued with a joyful brunch and cocktail gathering, where Ibu donors had the chance to connect with Wafae and toast to the impact of partnership and marketplace access.

We’re so grateful for the chance to hear Wafae’s story, celebrate the beauty of craft and culture, and be reminded of the power of opportunity. Because of you, this work is possible. 💛

Thirty women. Thirty new tailoring careers. In Niger, custom-made garments are a way of life — which means a skilled tailor is never short of work.

Ibu’s Artisan Partner, Dispositif d’Initiatives pour les Métiers de l’Artisanat (DIMA), trained a cohort of 30 women at a national obstetric fistula center, providing the skills, resources, and instruction needed to become self-employed tailors. Last month, the women celebrated their graduation and received sewing machines to continue their craft. Among those watching was a young boy, witnessing his mother claim a more secure, self-authorized future — a beautiful reminder that the impact of this work reaches far beyond one woman.

Beat the heat with these stunning hand fans made by CORO CORA®

Made of Toquilla palm by women artisans from Sandoná, a small town tucked in the mountains of Southern Colombia, using a traditional technique. The process begins by obtaining the threads from the leaves of the Toquilla, which are then dyed and interwoven to create beautiful and intricate pieces that are the ultimate expression of the region’s culture and identity. For decades, artisan communities in the region have preserved this art of weaving Toquilla palm, and it currently constitutes their main source of income.

We partner with artisan groups who use sustainable techniques such as Ikat Dyeing: A complex and labor-intense process of counting and wrapping threads with a tight vise of rubber, leaves, or thread, then immersing in dye multiple times. Once complete and rinsed, the threads are warped on a loom, never quite perfectly, which creates the slightly blurry effect of ikat.

Wearing Ikat is an act of connection. To the women who weave each carefully dyed thread. To the heritage vibrating in every pattern. To a slower, more thoughtful way of creating and consuming fashion.
