Who doesn't like a man in a kilt?

Scottish tartans in the 1700s were more than striking patterns; they were woven symbols of identity, loyalty and heritage. Each combination of colors and stripes, known as a sett, represented a region (and clans later in history).

During this time, tartans were handwoven from locally dyed wool, meaning no two were exactly alike. Some used a basic check, a split check, a superimposed check, etc. And it wasn’t merely about being stylish; it was a proud declaration of kinship and allegiance.

However, following the Jacobite uprisings, the British government sought to suppress Highland culture. The Dress Act of 1746 made wearing tartan illegal (with few exceptions), transforming it from everyday attire into a quiet act of resistance.

And for those who have seen "Outlander," you should be well aware of this historic incident. (Also, have you visited our Outlander costume exhibit at Yorktown yet??)

Today, tartans are enduring symbols of Scottish culture and history, as well as a reminder of resilience, tradition and identity woven through generations.
