Crafty__Threads My name is Anastasiia, and I am a master of crafts with over 15 years of experience in cross-stitch and satin stitch embroidery on clothing

My name is Anastasia. I was born and raised in Russia, in the cold lands of Siberia, where temperatures can drop to -45 degrees Celsius or even lower. For the first 28 years of my life, I lived in my hometown, completed school, earned a higher education, and pursued my favorite hobby for 14 years. Additionally, I engaged in choreography and dancing from the age of 4. Five years ago, I got married,

and five years ago, our son was born. Less than a year ago (as of the date 01/12/24), we changed our lives by moving to America, to the wonderful, green state of North Carolina. Now, here, we are rebuilding our lives from scratch. However, my hobby is always with me; I cannot live without creativity, embroidery, and handicrafts. I want to monetize my hobby and share a part of my soul, which is infused into each of my works, with people because I love my hobby with all my heart.

Russian embroidery has a centuries-old history. Part 2

Initially, embroidery in Russia was an activity for the privileged, including monks and representatives of the nobility. The materials used for work were expensive fabrics such as silk or velvet, pearls, precious stones, and silver or gold threads. This type of embroidery adorned not only the clothing of the boyars and members of the royal family but also the garments of church ministers and the decoration for temples. One of the most skilled craftswomen of that time was Ksenia, the daughter of the famous Russian tsar Boris Godunov. Her work from 1601, a cover she made specifically for the royal throne, has survived to this day.

Starting from the 18th century, embroidery ceases to be the privilege of the nobility. It becomes one of the obligatory activities for ordinary peasant girls. Undoubtedly, their works were not made from expensive materials, but their artistic value was no less. Peasant craftswomen skillfully selected patterns, combined colors, and expertly executed various stitches, helping them create masterpieces of incredible beauty. Embroidery was mainly done by women at that time. Girls started learning to embroider from the age of 5 or 6, and by 13 to 15, they were expected to prepare their dowries. These included cross-stitched tablecloths, headscarves, towels (about a hundred of them), and headdresses. Shortly before the wedding, a public display of the dowry was arranged, indicating the diligence, neatness, and skill of the bride.

Russian embroidery has a centuries-old history. Part 1

The existence of embroidery in the era of Ancient Russia is evidenced by archaeological finds dating back to the 9th-12th centuries. People have always conveyed the beauty of nature, their sensations through symbolic signs and patterns: crosses, lines, diamonds, and many other methods. Our ancestors also expressed their perception of incomprehensible natural phenomena, the surrounding world, using symbolic signs – symbols. According to folk beliefs, cross-stitch embroidery was not only meant to adorn clothing and household items but also to protect against any evil. Everyday towels were particularly valued in this regard. Several craftswomen worked simultaneously on creating such a towel. If they started the work at dawn and finished it before sunset, the product was considered capable of protecting against various diseases, evil forces, or natural disasters.

Cross-stitch embroidery is deeply rooted in history and is considered one of the oldest forms of handcraft. The origins of cross-stitch date back to ancient times, making it challenging to pinpoint an exact emergence date. However, its widespread adoption across various cultures is undeniable.

During the Middle Ages, cross-stitch gained exceptional popularity as monks utilized it to adorn ecclesiastical garments and altar cloths. Over time, it became accessible to a broader audience, with ladies embroidering cross-stitch patterns on clothing, household textiles, and various items.

While the precise inception date remains elusive, cross-stitch has been an integral part of manual creativity for centuries, flourishing across diverse cultures and historical periods.

Embrace the timeless artistry of cross-stitch and let your creativity weave a tapestry that transcends eras. 🌟

This piece of art has been my passion for a whole 15 years! At the age of 14, I discovered the world of embroidery. In Russian schools, we have a subject called "Technology" or "Labor," where we learn various skills, from sewing to embroidery. The theme of "cross-stitching" captured me, starting with a small rose and leading to my first significant piece, for which I earned first place in the region.

Now, at 29, I'm still in love with this art. I remember how exciting it was! There's something enchanting about creating wonderful things with your own hands. I continue to be inspired and create, and it's an incredible feeling. 🌸✨ Share your crafting stories! πŸ§΅πŸ’–
