JackFest rocks! Over 2000 neighbors joined our family at beautiful Foxfield for the biggest and most successful JackFest ever! A big congrats to the Callahan’s who co directed this wonderful community event and thanks to all the amazing volunteers who helped make it such a grand event. All the kids had a super time, including 11 year old Jack and the big winners are our friends at the Cville Ronald McDonald House!

A big thanks to our UVa friends at Morven, who treated our Ragged walking group to a wonderful tour on foot of this magnificent historic venue. Every year, Central Virginia makes a bid for the strongest distance running region in the entire state, and this fall appears to be no different. Last Saturday’s Albemarle Invite at Panorama Farms brought together almost all of the top local programs and individuals for one last opportunity to toe the line against each other, regardless of school size or classification.

We are excited to debut the first Ragged Mountain Cross Country Poll of the year. Based on votes by area coaches, the weekly poll ranks the top 15 individuals and top 5 teams from the Central Virginia/Daily Progress area. In addition to being posted on our social media channels and our website, it will also run in the Thursday digital version of the Progress and the Saturday physical version.

As is the case almost every year, Central Virginia is once again flexing its muscles as possibly the best area in the entire state when it comes to distance running. On the girl’s side, the story continues to be William Monroe’s Samantha Nitzsche, who is arguably the top female runner in the entire state, regardless of classification. The Virginia Tech commit went on a tear her junior year, winning three state titles (XC, Outdoor 1600, Outdoor 3200) and putting up some nationally ranked times of 17:16 for 5K, 4:50 for 1600 and 10:22 for 3200. This fall, she has picked up right where she left off, notching three early season wins at the Ragged Mountain Cup, Fork Union and Oatlands….

-Ellen Brock: CTC Volunteer of the Year Award
-Peter Hufnagel and the Miller School: CTC Community Service Award
-Katie Singleton: CTC Most Improved
-Tim Wendel: outgoing CTC President award
-Diane Rosin: The CTC Lifetime Service Award (the club’s highest honor).

A huge round of applause to our neighbors at the Miller School for their wonderful new and enlarged parking area at Dick Woods Road! Thanks to the selfless efforts of Jay Drake, Sheila Scott and Peter Hufnagel our running, hiking and biking community can now enjoy triple the number of previous parking spots! Wow! Many thanks for your generosity and hospitality, Miller School friends!

Ragged Mountain Runners of the Week:
Everyone who participated in the 43rd Annual Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler is worthy of being recognized as our Ragged Mountain Runners of the week. The following are just a few of the amazing stories we were treated to at this iconic community event last Saturday.
-Katie Forkin, whose amazing performance represented all of the courageous women who have journeyed with breast cancer to the finish line of this special race!
-The UVa Women’s Crew Team, who, over the past four decades, have run with us every single year at the Four Miler, having made it their special community cause!
-Olivia Ballew, who rocketed to one of the fastest winning times in race history with a blazing 21:42!
-74 year old Ellen Brock, who blazed to the top of her age group with an impressive 36 minute performance at the Women’s Four Miler! And, on a side note, the 70-74 age division is our fastest growing group at this huge CTC event!
-William Monroe High senior Samantha Nitztsche, who had an amazing “Double”, by not only finishing 5th overall (23:49) at the Women’s Four Miler but then coming back, just a few days later, and placing first overall as the blue ribbon champion at the Ragged Mountain Cup on Tuesday!
