What does Natural Death even mean?

Natural death means the specimen was allowed to complete its natural life cycle and was collected only after it had died, rather than being killed for the purpose of preservation or display.
With insects such as butterflies and moths, a naturally deceased individual that lived through its adult life may show signs of normal wear: faded or missing wing scales, small chips or tears along the wing edges, scratches, or generally less-perfect wings. An individual collected very soon after emerging may look much more pristine.
However, pristine does not automatically mean it was killed, and damaged does not automatically mean natural death. Captive-raised insects can die naturally while still looking nearly perfect because they weren't exposed to predators, weather, vegetation, or extensive flight.

This is a example of a natural death, notice the tatered wings. Just because she's shredded doesn't make her any less beautiful. Clipping wings with scissors to make them look like natural death is disrespectful to the insect and normally they don't look this hauntingly beautiful.

The insect shown is an Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis), a large and variable member of the royal moth and giant silkworm family (Saturniidae).
Appearance: Features a heavy, furry yellow-to-tan body and broad yellow wings heavily dusted or splotched with purplish-brown and light brown markings.
Size: Known to be one of the largest moth species in North America, with a wingspan that can reach up to 4 to 7 inches.
Behavior: Adults do not feed (they lack functional mouthparts) and fly primarily at night during the summer months.

✨ Finally finished this one, and I couldn't be happier with how it came together. ✨

This one-of-a-kind antique frame features one male and one female Spanish Moon Moth, surrounded by preserved botanicals, dried citrus, and layered natural textures on a deep black velvet background. I wanted this piece to feel warm, a little whimsical, and like a tiny moment of nature frozen in time.

Every piece I make is handcrafted from start to finish using sustainably sourced specimens and carefully chosen vintage materials, making each creation completely unique.

Thank you all for following along and supporting my artβ€”it truly means the world to me. πŸ’›

After taking a little over a month away from creating, it feels so good to be back at the workbench. 🀍

This newest piece features two male and one female Ghostly Silk Moths nestled among layers of hand-arranged preserved florals inside a vintage gold frame. Every bloom was thoughtfully placed to create a soft, ethereal composition that lets these incredible moths take center stage.

There's something special about returning to creating after stepping awayβ€”it reminds me why I fell in love with this art in the first place. I can't wait to share more with you all. πŸ–€

Ceranchia apollina, commonly known as the Ghostly Silkmoth or Giant Ghostly Silk Moth, is a large, distinctive moth native to Madagascar. This is a female and is definitely a beaut 😍
