Starting in middle school, I can remember a time where I was overly confident! I had always loved to sing & perform & there was a time I would stand on a chair in front of just about anyone, & belt my little heart out. In middle school though, body image became a huge focus. Of course I would realize that I was bigger than other girls, but it was only when they started pointing it out too, that it really took a toll on my self-confidence. I specifically remember a choir performance where I had a solo & I was literally nauseous with my knees shaking because I thought the shirt I had to wear was showing too many of my “rolls”. Towards the end of middle school, I remember doing just about anything to lose weight before high school. It quickly turned into an uphill battle with anorexia that peaked when I was a sophomore in high school.

At that point I was almost 5’7 & 80 pounds. I had a performance at school & walked off stage, all of my family & friends were crying. Naturally, I thought it was tears of joy from my performance, but I quickly realized it was because my eating disorder was evident. I needed help, but none of the external nutritionists, therapists, or doctors gave it to me. Sure, they tried, but there came a point where I needed to find the confidence from within to love myself again. It took a long time for me to get there. To gain the weight back, learn to love my stretch marks, & appreciate the things that made me… me.

Since college, I have volunteered working with young students & I started to realize that the bullying that instills self-doubt is happening so much younger than it was when I was in school. I had the idea for years to write a book about my journey with anorexia, but I wanted it to be digestible enough for young females to read before they have the chance to be affected. “Paper Dolls Don’t Have Hearts” is the story of my journey through a poetic format, with self-illustrations. It validates the feelings of doubt that every female has at one time or another & then gives hope that we can all learn to love ourselves.

Is Self Love Selfish? -

So many people are afraid of doing things for themselves or even worse afraid of thinking for themselves because they are worried people will think they are selfish.  I have been there at times and have put my needs last so that I could please or help others.  I was at church last Sunday and the p...

How to Deal with a Mother Who Has Body Image Issues -

Just as homeowners set physical property lines around their land, we need to set mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual boundaries for our lives to help us distinguish what is our responsibility and what isn’t.” ― Henry Cloud, Boundaries: When To Say Yes, How to Say No

Learn How to Love Your Body -

This is probably the number one question I get and see in my body positive groups.  So many of us want to know how we can truly love our bodies for how they look without trying to change them.  As young girls, we are told right from the get-go that beauty is what we should try to always obtain and...
