July 16 marks the passing of actress, singer, and style icon Jane Birkin.⁠

Jane Birkin had a prolific music and acting career but she may be best known in pop culture for being the inspiration for the coveted Birkin Bag from Hermès.⁠

Jane was known for carrying the same hand-woven straw basket everywhere she went, no matter the occasion, because she found it challenging to find a purse she actually liked. In 1983, Jane was seated on a flight next to Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas. After the contents of her basket fell to the floor of the plane, Birkin explained her plight to Dumas who designed the outline for what would become the Birkin Bag.⁠

Today, the Birkin Bag is known as one of the ultimate status accessories coming in a myriad of colors, various types of leather, and multiple sizes and it is notorious for how difficult they are to obtain⁠

Despite being British by birth, Jane lived in her adopted France since the 1960s, and the French Culture Ministry said the country has now lost a "timeless Francophone icon." ⁠⁠⁠⁠
