🎂✨Happy Anniversary! As of Thursday October 1st we’ve officially been open for 4 years!! 🎂✨
Unfortunately instead of getting to celebrate, we got to deal with talking to the police and being triangulated by thieves.
There’s a few things I’ve learned in this 4 years of running a store. Humans will show you signs of their intentions if you pay close enough attention.
Here’s how Thursdays incident went…Two individuals entered 6th St Secondhand at the exact same moment. One through the front door and one through the back door. (First clue) I immediately noticed the man entering the exit and motioned him to please come into the shop and out of my back room. As a woman was entering the front door with a huge backpack and a purse, she asked to put down her backpack behind the counter. (2nd clue) she immediately asked the price of one of our Coach purses behind the glass cabinet next to her backpack (3rd clue).
She “shopped” around for a while. I kept a loosely close eye on her as I do everyone in the shop. Trusting she’d act like an adult. She picked things up here and there, after 15 minutes I noticed a hanger with nothing on it (4th clue) Nothing too out of hand. This happens all the time unfortunately. And I notice it every time. I don’t let empty hangers stay on the racks. Things are pretty dialed in. I just let her keep walking around without saying anything. She had shoes and a wallet from my shop tucked under her arm, she went into another room. And then the items were no longer visible. She had her giant purse full, and was walking out the front door. I said to her as she left “Just going to steal it huh?” She mumbled and continued out the door. The man who entered at the same time as her had been on some loud phone call seemingly trying to distract me. (Clue 5)
Unfortunately for Shelley her backpack she forgot her backpack. 🙃Oopsy. I immediately investigated the backpack to make sure it wasn’t something dangerous in there. Just her diary, a bunch of make up, and a piece of mail with her name on it. So, I tossed the contents into the dumpster.
An hour later people started showing up for her backpack.
